This may of interest to tabletop gamers, there is a 22" (50cm) tablet on kickstarter that's designed to be used a game board with interactive figures.

Project lead is the guy who left Atari over non-payment.

Not sure I’m ready to spend $350 on this. But I love the concept! The ability to interconnect multiple boards is a great enhancement!

I feel the price is reasonable for the hardware, but it will be expensive for the average tabletop hobby equipment(*). It is comparable to a game console price, however.

* board and RPG of course, warhammer $40,000 is well named.

There will be hardware in the base discs.

Additionally, I don’t know if regular screen hardware can distinguish more than about 3 objects at once (no-one appears to support more than 4 finger gesture). It’s possible you might be able to fix this with software, or maybe you can’t. For a game I am sure you will want more than 3 objects simultaneously.

Yes there is hardware in the base.

But I was more concerned with the number of touches that a standard screen allows simultaneously.

I've since looked at various screen specificiations, and most modern screens will support 10 distinct simulanaeous inputs so it should not be a problem.
