Detailed World and System Generation

Dargurd

Mongoose
Hi All,

In other versions of the Traveller game there was a really detailed system, world etc generation. Is there an equivalent item yet for Mongoose Traveller ?

Regards...

EDG (Evil Dr. Ganymede) had posted a long while back some great fairly accurate (or more accurate?) set of generation tables (he's a Ph. D. in like Planetary Science or something, I forget specifically what but he knows his stuff).

You can find him over at the SFRPG forums (He's like the owner or Admin or something) and he might provide them to you.

I've tried finding the thread here that he posted them to but, my search skills are severely lacking - very severely.

Went back through the forum search and managed to find the post where "Guffy the Hiver" gave me the link to the specific page on EDG's site - the page was long since taken down.

I did find this at his site though: http://evildrganymede.net/rpgs/worldbuilding/

The first link is a document for generating stars, but that's all i could find.

+1 for Evil Doctor Ganymede.

He's quite approachable through the SFRPG forum (as EDG) if you have specific questions.

ROFL

Right. Not if you question his word or his opinion of you is not high.

Since the numbers are all about the same, i'd look for old copies of Original Traveller book 6 scouts, and Digest Group Grand Survey.

Look for Leroy Guatney's pages also on revised scouts.

Speaking of people who have low opinions of their fellow fans...

Grand Survey/Grand Census are basically the same as the later World Builders Handbook, should that be more available. Not likely, but knowing is half the battle (the other half is red lasers and blue lasers).

The basics of extended system generation (star, orbits, etc) are also in TNE, though that version lacks all the exhaustive planetary detailing (temps, tilts, etc).

That's true, but it would still be great to see an updated world generation system. When the Grand Suvey and the World Builder's Handbook were published, we really only knew about the existence of one solar system - our own. Sure, we anticipated the existence of other planets...but we expected them to be much like our own. The large number of extrasolar planets discovered in the last decade have greatly increased our understanding of what is possible in the real universe. And we are discovering that other star systems can be wildly different to our own. Indeed, we are living in a golden age of extrasolar planetology right now.

Furthermore, the exploration of our own solar system in the same time period has helped us to achieve a deeper understanding of what the planets and moons in our own backyard are like. And we've found a lot of interesting environments out there that could provide interesting roleplaying potential. Just imagine a survival adventure that maroons the characters on frigid place like Titan with hydrocarbon lakes and liquid methane rain...

The detailed world generation system provided by the later Traveller books was a decent piece of work for its day, but it is looking increasingly out of date. I'd love somebody to take a crack at rewriting it to take account of some of the latest discoveries.

TNE does include such details ( World Tamer's Handbook, GDW 311, pp. 83-87).

Right. World Tamers usability suffered a bit more from the TNE layout than most, and I tend to forget those details are there. World Builders/Grand Survey had a nice easy process for those details.

That said, I'd go with TNE for extended system generation for now. It got star types closer to right than Mega did.

Did you get to see the Excel Worksheet Brett Evil made for GURPS Space 4th Edition?

AFAIK, this is the most advanced tool of the type available, even if the author was dissatisfied with some calculations concerning (IIRC) tidally locked planets or something like that.

Worth a look:

GURPS Handbook of the Planets (Beta)

I'd love to see some world books like GURPS put out. They were planetary surveys loaded with adventure hooks.

And yet they stopped at what, six? There are only so many of those you can do before the hooks start to repeat. Someone (Gypsy Knight?) is doing worldbook PDFs, but I have no idea if those meet your expectations.

That would be us. We currently have 20 of them out there. The first 12 are compiled (with 8 others that are not available elsewhere) in the Cascadia subsector book. The remaining eight are available on DTRPG as well.

In fact, Quick Worlds 20: Atargatis is is currently selling for the low cost of FREE.

You can check out some reviews of many of our products over at Alegis Downport and, of course, on DTRPG.
