Although the turn out was sadly very small it gives us great pleasure to say that once again “Gregs Crew Triumphed (it is irrelevant that we were the only ones there!)
With only 6 people we did make sue no –one played anyone twice………..
Good variety of fleets
Centauri
Drakh
Earth
League (lead by the Pak!)
Minbari
Psi Corps
Most took advantage of the alt universe setting to use new ships and allies and seem to have enjoyed themselves – which is the main thing.
A few Images from the Tourney
The Pak actually win initiative
A welcome repast at lunchtime
Minbari vs Psi Corps/Narn/Vorlons
Earth vs Pak
This was taken shortly before the Pak fired their Hurr gunships and Convoy Guardian – annihilating a Shadow Scout, A Shadow Star and poor Chloe (
)………much to both of our surprise but then 40AD DD will do that
This was taken in the next couple of minutes
The remaining Shadow Star fired its beam at the Guardian, getting a 6,6, crit and inflicting 54 more damage on the already damaged Guardian and in the resulting explosion destroying the Vree Scout and battering both gunships.
If this was not unfair enough on Ken already – I did the same again on the rear gunship next turn from the EA warship and changing the game totally from a mopping up exercise by the League to the same for EA - not at all fair....................
It meant that once again- Ken was robbed! Worst of all and extremely embarrassingly – it meant I had won my own tournament – opps.
Scores at the end
Charles (Da Boss).....Earth Alliance/Shadows................68
Greg.........................Psi Corps / Vorlons/ Narn............42
Kennyboy.................League(standing defiantly alone)...32
Simon (Chandler)...... Minbari (standing defiantly alone) ..28
Paul (Clanger)........... Drakh and Shadows.....................17
Alex.........................Centauri(standing defiantly alone)..3
Notes on the format etc
The format seemed to work in general and having adopted the Walsall method of scoring – we realised that it actually designed to help reduce swarm style fleets as part of the points awarded are for ships destroyed minus ships lost. I like this myself but if I had understood it better I would have made it more clear……
Beam rules –
(we used “Burgers” 1-2 miss, 3-5 hit, 6 3hits – NO re-rolls)
In general it meant that most ships achieved hits with their beams that were roughly (1 AD more or less) than their AD – only a couple of unusual hits – I missed with a 3AD beam first turn but don’t recall ever getting more than 5 hits with 3 AD beam over all three games. There was one massive 12 hits reported from a 4AD beam – but that was all sixes………not easy and rarer than the usual roll ups we all know.!?
But did people prefer it – to be honest very divided opinion – of the 6 players – 3 definitely preferred the old system – with the much higher roll up / total miss chances – as they found it was part of the charm / fun of beams. Also the low ad beams - 2AD felt ineffectual.
For me personally I would rather the number of hits was around the number of AD – As I understand it was balanced around? The new system is more predictable (unlike the critical effects that can rob people) but to many will remain less fun.
Oh and Ken likes Pak Fleet Carriers............
Thanks to all
