Cursed Earth Desperadoes Advice?

Howdy gang.

I got a whole bunch of Cursed Earth Desperadoes just recently, but looking at their army list I realize they're a lot more complicated than my last army, the Street Gang. Between the alternate rules for mutants and the fact that Desperadoes themselves work a little differently, I have no idea where to begin!

Any players that might be able to give a friendly word of advice or two on how to best max out my army's potential? I'm looking at a standard 500 credit list, nothing fancy.
 
These guys are infinitely customisable due to the mutations, so you can do anything (except make a horde army I guess). I like a gang that can handle itself both close and at range, so for the core I go for a "mutant martial artist"...a hero tweaked for hand to hand combat using mutations that boost his melee plus martial artists abilities (shell/no weapons), and a second mutant hero who is the ultimate sniper(rifle/pad). That leaves enough credits for 3 desperados and I setup two for ranged (spitgun/pad, spit pistol/pad) and one for melee (zip/axe/pad).
 
I recently started up a CED list, 4 members in the gang, each built identically - Armour and Agility mutations, +1 each to Melee and Melee Dice, first two talents from the Martial Artist tree and Pad Armour to start. 125 credits each.

Oh, did I mention I have miniatures of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? ;)
