Cthulhutech in B&W

AlphaStrike

Mongoose
I've just read on the C'Tech forum that any future print runs of the rulebook will be in black and white. It's a business decision, obviously. A shame, though. I'm lucky enough to have a copy, and it looks mighty fine in full colour.

Here's the skinny. Color copies of the book are no longer available.

The reason for this is because the press that the 'Goose purchased wasn't able to perform as advertised. This lead to the hard decision for Mongoose to stop printing in house and go back to outsourced printing. The good news there is that the printing issues are a thing of the past. The bad news is that financially, color is just way to expensive to produce and turn a profit.

We (WildFire) were only making enough money to pay for production on CthulhuTech. After putting in thousands of hours of work into just the core book alone, there was no financial reward to coincide. WildFire consists of 3 guys that did the lions share of work on the book and we all do it as an escape from our day jobs. i.e. I designed all the mechs, tagers, uniforms, and art directed the book while I was still on active duty in the US Navy. So we're not living large somewhere and just have money to burn. We love this industry, and we want to produce a product that looks as good as the big guys.

On the financial reasons; to print 1 copy of CthulhuTech it cost over $40. That price doesn't include shipping at international rates. Also keep in mind that Mongoose gets a cut of the profits for their services through printing, marketing, and distribution. With an MSRP of $49.95 you can make an educated guess as to what our (WildFire's) first check for selling 1,000 copies in December was. All our money is going out the door to pay for production on books in progress and we (the partners at WildFire) would like to turn a profit and get paid for our hard work. We are still producing books, and will continue to do so. However, if we continued the full color runs, we'd be closing up shop by years end.

We love playing RPG's and now, designing them! Our idealistic goal by printing in color and putting allot of love into producing CTech was that the industry would take notice and turn up their production values. I also secretly hoped that we'd be a run away hit and sell a few thousand copies in the first month. We did really well as a new comer although, not having product on the shelves due to printing issues have left us profit free over the last 3 1/2 months. Because of the way that CTech looked in color, an inside source at a major company has told me that they are starting a full color line because of CTech! That in itself is a great victory!

We will still be developing all the major books i.e. Core and 'Vade Mecum' in full color, they'll just be printed in B&W. So if you want the color version of the Core Book or Vade Mecum, the pdf's will fulfill that demand. We're hoping that someday we'll be making enough to afford color runs and as such, we'll continue to layout and design books in full color to prepare for the day that we can.

Cheers,
Mike

What got me converted on C'tech was the Adventure in S&P 55 so thanks once more to Alpha Strike as long as I get a book I dont mind.

What if you were to do a small-run limited edition color version ? I have the color core-book and it really is simply beautiful.

Black and white is cool, as the thing that really matters is all the fluff and crunch, and as long as that still rocks, I'll still be buying them!

Me too! I hope Wildfire realizes the necessity to support the game with pre-fab adventures either in S&P or in a format similar to Dark Passions except smaller like Conan: Heretics. There is a plethora of setting and additional character/monsters/rules scheduled but I hope to see more adventures like The Icething Cometh. I know AlphaStrike mentioned he is doing a followup to TIC and I can't wait for it. I like creating my own adventures and have some ideas but often I'll use ideas/NPC's/scenerios from pre-fabs. Creating adventures/campaigns for a new game is a must, IMO.

Keep in mind that producing CTech material isn't our full time jobs at the moment. It's very slowly gaining steam (as far as we can tell) however, I still put in a rediculous amount of time as a freelance graphic designer and art director. It'd be awesome if we could contribute to S&P every month and that's something that we're working on. Let me talk to Matthew Grau a bit more about this and we'll see what we can do.

I hear ya Mike. I'm excited for the future supplements and hope the game really picks up some steam with each release. I appreciate all of the hard work you guys are putting into the game. I'm not complaining about the future supps I just hope some future pre-fab adventures are being considered. I know I'll buy them!

Time to pimp my adventure :) I agree with you Strom that every RPG needs prewritten adventures and in particular a play out of the box demo up front. So I wrote my own and it can be found here if you are interested:

I checked out your adventure last week hal and it's very well done. Great job. Looks professional and is a great example of the type of adventures I hope to see in the future schedule. Unfortunately, I don't know know or like anime. Just can't get into it. That said I do think there is a place for non-anime lovers with Cthulhutech - I'm proof of that.

Fair enough and I agree with you.

I will say that if you ever wish to get into anime, find a trusted friend who is a fan and let them guide you. As with any hobby (and more so with anime in many ways), there is a lot of bad anime out there. However, there is also a lot of gems and the effort to find these (at least in my case) was well worth it.

That is definitely possible. Vade Macum also looks as it will have more info on Government organisations.

I had decided to let Cthulhutech pass me by. I noticed a copy at my local store (Turku, Finland) and leafed though it a bit.

The glossy full cover hardback book was so gorgeous and professional looking, that I forked over the 50 euro's then and there, and feel I have gotten good value for my money.

If the book had been black and white, I would never have picked it up. I've also stopped buying any mongoose Glorantha books as prints, and instead only get them from drivethroughrpg, since I want to print them in colour myself.

Going BW has been a really bad call IMO. Appearance matters Mongoose.
