I like the Cthonian Stars book too. But, I'm not thrilled with the "solar system only" aspect. I wish they would have kicked it out to at least a limited interstellar game like Cthulhu Rising or Traveller 2300.

The upside for me money wise is that I may pass on the Void books and just get the two Traveller books and then mash them with Cthulhu Rising and/or Traveller 2300 (I'm also considering a Mass Effect crossover, but now I'm rambling…)

I think it would be easy to advance the TL a bit after a few games and let the PC's have the first "jump/ftl" craft...

Run a "Event Horizon" game.

Overall, a smashing job! I really like this book quite a bit. A bargin at $15 dollars.

The game can be played as is - or modified to fit your current campaine.

The first way I'm going to use it is in a Third Imperium game - I'll have some crafty cultists up to no good in the Solomani Rim area.......then I'll find other fun ways to use the information contained within this great book.

I see years of fun role playing ahead of me!

^ Thats the good thing about it, transference factor. Anyways, both me and Ronin have games starting on the Ctech forum for those interested, Ronin's is starting soon and I'm looking for more players before we begin *hint hint*

But yeah, I got the pdf yesterday, I liked the Seethari but there are other non HPL beasties mentioned which I will be using before I intro Seethari. The things mentioned in the pdf have also pushed some more adventure seeds in my game idea (it was written before I got the pdf so the horror is not a guess the monster type thing), turning it from a one-shot plot to an ongoing campaign. I love it and like how its more central in our solar system.
I will say free-trade games will only really work with the inner planets only otherwise transit time is too long to be useful in getting the cash for your mortgage. That way it suits Warden and Explorer type games who get their own ships for their respective missions, no mortgage but the ships dont actually belong to the chars but the organisation.

At some point I will convert my homebrew Aliens over to Cstars, but there is more than enough inspiration in the pdf to go with whats included, so they'll probably be in a future project or after the initial story for my game is solved :)

Zero and Ronin, I'm interested. Say has anyone thought of using a VTT like iTabletop-Pandoren, or MapTools to run a virtual game? If the timing is workable I'd be there with bells on.

I cant speak for Ronin, but mine will be your regular Pbp on the Ctech forum.
With a Pbp and using invisiblecastle's website as a dice-roller, you can drop in a post whenever is convenient, especially as we may be from different sides of different ponds. I will do regular updates, probably once a week ontop of players posting to keep things from getting stale (a real weakness in Pbp). That doesnt count things like combat or NPC dialogue which I will be posting whenever needed.
Gamerdude, if youre interested in either, drop us a yell in Recruiting on the Ctech forum. Again, this is an open invite to anyone reading this.

Peeking in, I will be running the same old fashion pbp as well...I will be using Invisible Castle as well...

Youre more than welcome :)

Ronin has a game centred on Wardens, any char concept seems ok as long as at least their last of 3 terms is with the Wardens. Its looking really promising and I am signed up as a player myself.

My Pbp is open to any concept and have posted homeworld skills for the Kuiper Belt colony I will be starting it on, though any homeworld is fine for a char. Ronin in turn is a player for my game.

I am less interested in the HPL aspects of Cthonian Stars than the detailing of the solar system in Traveller terms and some good spaceships to explore it with.. did they do that?

How much of a useable solar system setting is there if I strip out the HPL?

The solar system is moderately detailed, each planet has some good background material and the colonies are described well enough. A chapter detailing the worlds of the system has a few pages for each world and a UWP. Couldnt ask for more, really.

Distance between each planet is not given, though a quick google or request here can give you a list for that (generally each planet's AU distance from the Sun). The time it takes for a ship to travel to a world is given in a chart with the min/max number of days. Inner system travel pretty much takes a fortnight to each world, wherever you go, due to the small space theyre in.

The only thing not described for some reason is the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, though the Kuiper Belt and Pluto are described (more or less seperately) and some transference is possible.

Campaign-wise, there is only really the bare bones of plot-hooks in the game and you do need to do alot of work, specifically space math. This does give alot of freedom though.

Each planet has a UWP, though the trade codes match the fluff, not the actual UWP given. If youre not running a trade game, then it doesnt matter. The UWPs as they are match up well with the facts and the fluff.

Colonies are generally underground or in domes, so you'll rarely need vacc or atmos gear dirtside, unless youre going in the wilds. Check the UWP to see what you'll need in that case.

The ships are ok, a nice varied bunch but kinda bare bones. Theyre all stat-blocked and deckplanned. They look cool too. Hopefully The Void rpg will have more ships or a ship book when its sorted out.

Thats about all I can say, been playing for a while and really enjoying it. To be fair the best stuff comes when there arent monsters attacking! The setting is rich and the late TL 8 system has some great advances that can be added as background stuff when rping. Recommended if you want to rp something more Dead-Space or ALIEN-like with Traveller.
