I think I may have to repaint my shadows now after seeing yours Kremmen, its really a very nice effect :D

Thanks I am pleased with the shadows, I would like to give the credit to someone I can't remember in this foum however. My shadows were darker and more subtly painted, then I saw someone else who had painted them black with the grey lines, actually simpler than my approach had been, but more effective, does take quite a long time though!

So I repainted all my ships. Currently 2 cruisers, 1 scout and 3 fighters. I have another scout to assemble, they are awful ships to assemble, and I have to get some more fighters when I get around to it.

Will put pics of Vorlons up soon.

Sounds a strange way to do yellow. Not something I would ever have thought of on my own. I'll give it a try. I spend a lot of time picking up tricks and tips from people. Believe it or not I have no artistic ability at all, my ships are the result of years of careful tricks and tips that anyone could do.
I thought the same until I tried it. The idea originated from the infamous Fred Reed (creator of the Howling Griffons Chapter) back in the days when I was involved with GW. The principle is actually quite straight-forward, it just gets around the pigment density/opacity problem of yellow. A number of colours could be used as the base, we just found flesh tones to be the best. The yellow ink then works with the light and the base colour to produce yellow.

The banshees hair was done using that method. The same goes for the bottom half of the company marking on the Marauder NCO below.

Both are very different shades and depths of yellow, yet both were done in exactly the same way; flesh tones first, then a yellow wash.
At the end of the day, use what you are comfortable with, this just happens to be a method I use and have found to be successful. Thought I'd mention it in case someone else found it helpful as I did when Fred showed it to me eight years ago :)

Carl

Both those look very nice though I wouldnt call eithe rof them yellow tbh, the banshees look more reddish with highlights and the walker I would call beige ;)

But still a nice effect (and I really would never go back to not using inks, they make it SOOOO much easier to get fantastic effects)

The banshees are quite reddish, it is just the highlights that are yellow. I thought the same as you about the walker but look carefully, the yellow is not the walker, it is the COMPANY marking on the walker, which is a very clear yellow....

I made same mistake as you at first!

There is a reason i don't post pic's of my models, it would be plain embarassing. People here are to damn good. Really like the Drazi have to show my mate them, he might paint some now.

Actually you would be surprised how relatively easy the drazi are.

Main body paint it a medium to darkish gray (easy)
Let it dry and completely cover with a watered down black ink (easy)
let it dry thoroughly and dry brush a light to medium grey (a bit of care need be taken)

That's it, the "Trick" is the black ink layer in between the two greys.

A little bit of experience will show you how much to thin the ink down. If you used something already thinned like games workshop black wash, just dilute by about 50% with water.

If you look carefully you will see that the actual red lines I had to paint on really aren't very good, but I get away with it because some of the other tricks work really well and give the overall model a really cool look.

I think you are overly critical on yourself Captain, they are a lot better painted than you give yourself credit for. The wash technique is easy ... its also easy to make a complete mess of too. The reason the Drazi look so good is because the techniques you describe have been well executed.
Thats not luck, thats experience.

You are far too modest, its a superb looking fleet you have there, especially the fighters which immediately caught my eye. Good job! :)

You are very kind. Yes I must admit I really was happy with the little 6 a base fighters. They were tiny and still came out really good.

Guys,

As I messed up on the 11th, I wanted to show you what you would be missing. Not sure I have done the pictures properly in the forum?

I have 2 Vree saucers, one not based and one temporarily gone missing when I cleared up my painting table!

What do you think?

I have been doing a lot of painting recently, so put in a pic of my repainted shadows too.

I hate these Drazi - They beat me every time I played against them!!!!

LOL

Tip fot yellow (I know Fred from GW as well - he used to get us monkeys in the stores to paint his figures)

Using GW paints - from a black undercoat, paint Bleached bone first, then do a yellow, over that coate, comes out a nice bright yellow, use vomit brown watered down and wash to edges and then paint sunburst on top, highlight with bad moon yellow if required, you get a rich bright yellow and an orangey Brown shade

Also for a bright red over black undercoate, paint tenticle pink first then do a blood red over the top, use a red magenta ink wash to make the red even, and will also shade (or scab red wash) then highloght with blood red and blazing orange on edges

Any way I have seen Kapt Kremmens fleet in the flesh as such and they are good

PS
Jon may want them of you, will discuss at the club tonight with you

The linework on those little tiny fighters is awsome, how did you manage it? Drybrushing? ink? Or a really steady hand?

Actually I don't have a very steady hand, and most of my brushes are a bit wrecked. The grey lines are all done with darkish grey, then lighter grey dry brushed, then black ink then a light grey dry brushing.

My extended fleet will be there on Saturday to take on all comers. Particularly the despised GREEN Drazi
