Cpt Ishido Kremmen's fleets painted

Hi Guys,

Been busy the last week painting my little fleets. All models are Navwar 1/3000th scale. I think they are excellent value for money.

All painting and photos by me

If you like the sea effect I MUST recommend Valejo sea effect gel stuff, sorry for not getting the name right, but the stuff is absoloutely brilliant, any naval modeller MUST have some of this stuff.

Afraid not got most of my aircraft yet so no plane shots, will be by next week though

I have built a descent sized Japanese fleet which I have managed to only photograph part of, missing at least the 6 destroyers.

Also built an even larger US fleet including 2 Iowa's the tieeeeeny Texas and a couple of Yorktowns.

Hi Guys,

Sorry about the first post, I always struggle with the pics and hit send when I mean preview

This shot shows the Yamato, Shokako and a Nagato in the background

A close up of just the Yamato and Shokako

A couple of Jap Takao cruisers, this shot came out rather well.

Now to the US, the teeeeny Texas and a couple of Yorktowns

My Iowas which I have to admit are very impressive looking ships, everything a battleship should be, afraid the teeeny Texas looks a bit sad next to them

Got a good set of 4 heavy cruisers, 2 new orleans and 2 indianapolis

And I may have forgotten to photogragh the jap destroyers but I got a shot of my 6 fletchers

Paint schemes :-
US - I rather like this, it is based on a pic I saw of the Iowa, I think it is fairest to say I was "Inspired" by WWII camouflage rather than I have accurately duplicated it. Basically dark blue grey and light grey on the sides, dark blue grey on the decks. Only exception being carrier decks being Tan because they look nice like that...

Japs - I wanted something slightly different for the japs, appears they made less use of camoouflage than the US so I went for one colour, decided on a greener grey as this seemed more Japanese like. Again used tan for carrier decks, but the same also for battleship decks, looks nice and is different than the US

What does everyone think? post pics of your fleet. If we can get a fleet action at Mongoose towers I will bring both fleets and am happy to lend the US to someone, I have 2 carriers, 3 battleships, 5 cruisers and 6 destroyers to choose from.

Looking good. I'm especially impressed with how "clean" you've got them looking, mine tend to be a bit on the "muddy" side, need some practice.

Like the sea effects too. Is this the first time that you've used that sort of stuff?

Very nice! It is interestinging to see some up close pics of the Navwar versions of ships I have from Panzerschiffe that I am very familiar with.

All my new ships are now painted and based. Going to get them labeled today hopefully, and have pics up either later today or tomorrow.

Hi there,

What do you mean by "clean"?

I paint them and then ink them, which is great but can then make them look perhaps muddy? trick is to then selectively put a straight paint coat over the top again, trying to not cover the recessed detail....

Yes this is the first time I have ever used this vallefo stuff. It's great. Have to admit I just stipled it about a lot, if you are keen you should be able to do really effective bow waves etc.

I'm not surprised the Texas looks small if the other battleships you have are Iowas and the Yamato!

Although it really does look teeny even compared to the Yorktowns...

Anyway, a very nice fleet you'vev got there.

I am going to add some parallel white lines to both the US and Jap carrier decks. Anything else obvious I have forgotten?

I might try and get some 1/3000th aircraft to put on the carrier decks, has anyone done this does it work?

Only if you sand them down flat. The wings are usually way too thick, so they stick up off the deck too far - makes them look way too big. Then you'll have to replace the u/c of course. It worked for my (unpainted) Nimitz, and I didn't even bother replacing the u/c (although F14s and a Hawkeye have tricycle u/c so they sit at the right angle). Personally I think it's worth the efford, and even if you DON'T sand them down try it - use a bit of white glue or something and see how they look.

now that I had a better look, nice pics, nice minis. I see your Navwar Yamato has the early side secondaries - I have the Davco later version.

How easy did you find it cleaning up the Navwar minis mouldline? I've mostly worked on my older Davco minis so far, and been working on some Navwar, but sometimes that line looks damn awkward.

Wulf

Wulf,

I found the Navwar castings very good, (guess I am used to Mongoose) I had to remove very little flash or mould lines at all.

Judge for yourself, I am fairly terrible at mould lines, tending to just paint them! So however bad you think the mould lines are on the finished ships they weren't much worse than that when they started, someone less lazy than me could have cleaned them up easily.

Actually, I couldn't see any at all at first, and minimal if any at a closer look. Also, what Navwar carriers I have have no deck markings thanks to the vertical mould split - yours have visible desk lifts, were they moulded on?

I'm still trying to decide whether to buy some additional units from Davco (vastly easier to get, since they do online ordering), or Navwar (much bigger range, somewhat sharper moulds, but bloody annoying to order, and that vertical mould split).

Wulf

Yep, lifts on the US carriers are as on the casting, I only added ink.

Navwar seem to be excellent value for money. I also got my order from him very quickly, just a complete pain having to use something from a museum called a "Fax" whatever that is.

If it help there are several resellers of Navwar models which offer the same product at the same price but with enhanced customer service.

I think spirit games do, I know Doms decals are going to very shortly, he supplied all the aircraft, bases, magnets and transfers you will see shortly for my air wings.
