Mongoose
Hello, anyone clarify wether this game is under threat as ive heard rumours, and what with 4th edition coming out and this being pretty much the last d20 product mongoose are producing, why is that by the way why do they keep switching systems to what ever one they get next, d20 based to runequest based to traveler based? perhaps they should make their own system.

I'm sure the Mongoose will have thought about the future of the Conan RPG _before_ releasing the 2nd ed based on SRD3.5 a few months ago. My guess is they will keep supporting it for as long as people buy enough books to make it worthwhile.

It's always the same thing, after all. If we buy the books, Mongoose will keep on publishing them. Easy. Expansive, but easy.

hmm, just dont want to end up with another pile of redundant books like all the mongoose judge dredd books i have and are now defunct since its moving to the traveler system and i hate d6 based systems. did look at 4th edition d+d as thats always got players but it seems to be minature based now so thats out.

also have a large pile of d20 modern that are now defunct with that game getting dropped.
so far only bought 11 of the conan books and not sure ill be getting many more, getting a little concerned about buying books only to find they tell you you need to get a different book for the information, eg, return to the road of kings on stygia it basically tells you to buy the stygia book, then why have rtrok's then? i avoided the players guide for this reason as i managed to see it before buying and instead of reprinting all the info in one book for 2nd edition its just a index of where to find the info in 1st edition books, i cant get most of the 1st edition books so im a bit stuck there.
at least cthulhu carrys on with strength or id be totaly lost

lot of unhappy people on wizards of coast forum have started a few threads about their feelings on their game being dropped. seems 4th editions launch marked the end for it, even removing the web page from their site soon. so bye bye d20 modern. deff not going to be supporting that company no more, 4th edition sounds utter tripe and moderns gone.
castles and crusades by troll lord games sounds a fun version of early d+d though, may look at writing for and running that or runequest as im having a few problems with conan to be honest.
actually im a bit confused over how or why i stumbled back into the hobby as games are changing or dissapearing like crazy and ive spent a fortune getting burnt in the process

Why, d20 Conan and 3.5D&D are not miniatures based? Have you given a look at the combat chapter? They even suppose you count diagonal squares in a different way than vertical and horizontal ones. At least 4e avoids this c**p.
If you really want to recapture the essence of original D&D without ANY need for miniatures, Castles & Crusades is the way to go. See my other thread in which I port the Conan classes to C&C.

well 4th edition sounds more like a board game to me than a role playing game, minatures for me are something you can add to your game if desired to represent a character etc not something which is needed for play to take place. and the whole mmo thing is wrong it wont attract the warcraft players away from the pc to d+d and is just putting off some of the existing players it has, bad marketing strategy id say. there are alot of d+d players on the net saying the are switching to the pathfinder system (3.5) instead.
i think i will seriously look at running c+c but am concerned about its level of support or if many people do actually play it? its very rarely stocked in the game shops i know of and one said it sold alot some years ago but he had to sell the last copy at half price to shift it. dont want to buy into another dying game.

I have played some 4e sessions, and miniatures are definitely not needed. Or at least, no more needed than they were in 3.x. Actually, I like 4e much more than 3.x, since it cut on many of the complicated parts of 3.x (e.g. skill ranks, feat trees, monsters and NPCs following the same rules as PCs etc.)
4e is complex, but not complicated. 3.x was complex AND complicated.

C&C is well supported by Troll Lord games. Unfortunately, they do not have the same "power", as a company, of Wizards of the Coast or Mongoose, so distribution is not as good. However, you can directly order from them, they have an excellent service. I tried it many times.

Right now Troll Lord Games has a huge discount. Most of the items are sold at 10$, including Castles & Crusades PHB and Monsters & Treasure. For 20$ you can have a complete game system!

yeah few problems though, i live in scotland, and secondly i dont have a credit card, can get access to the books though but no players for it here or glasgow or all of scotland by the look of it. cant get players for cthulhu either but am happy writing for others fot that game, d+d seems to have players ( so has werewolf etc but always disliked those games) but i havent played d+d since .. well it was ad+d 2nd edition last time i played, and we didnt use minatures at all and distances were not in squares but feet. all the players had was character sheets and paper to draw maps on oh and dice, we only used 3 core books even if we had others and not that many adventures took place in dungeons as such but often cities, woods, marshland etc so no need or use for battlemat things and minatures.
i like quite a lot of the aspects to conan such as the various human types and no other typical fantasy races such as elves etc, the magic point system is cool with sacrafices etc but the spells are poor and so few even with the magic book, why not have a few offensive ish spells so the players dont keep just using defensive blasts over n over, healing is a pain in terms of planing a adventure end up feeling like u have to take it easy on players. theres a skill to make magic items yet we are told they are rare and a lost art, so what items should this skill create? why cant they just make a sword with it? unfortunatly i just dont know the setting enough i think, i havnt come accross the books appart from a collection for 20 pounds and no chance im paying that, from what i can see its just a bit to eastern for my liking and id prefer something a little more medival. by the way how come there are no lizard men? we have the rare snake men, ape men even hyena men but no lizards? i suppose i could use the system in a different setting but then i may aswell just use a different game.
actually have funding in place for the purpose of producing some rpg material and may still look at producing the cthulhu stuff all ready part written but at the present am seriously going to have to consider whether to carry on with rpg's.

so far from mogoose ive bought, pocket players guide and pocket dungeon masters guide (both now defunct and canceled) the pocket modern guide (now defunct too aswell as canceled), judge dredd rpg and 5 sourcebooks (defunct and canceled), slaine d20 (returned to shop quickly after purchase upon learning it was now runequest based and so d20 copy was useless), and now after 11 of the conan books i still find the system unworkable. i may give it one more go with another system before i call it a day though, ill investigate c+c and runequest to see which may be best and which is actually going to be played and have a future.

forgot to add ogl wild west and ogl horror to me list, both now canceled aswell. man i have bad luck in games

I know how it feels but to be honest: Who cares? The games you bought are not "invalid" by any means and can be played till the day the sun dies!

And I am not afraid that there will be a 4th edition of Conan EVER! In my humble oppinion 4th Edition is utter crap (I own it, so I know what I am talking about): There is no feel to it from a rpg-perspective. Might draw people from the MMORPG-crowd into gaming - so that could be a good thing.

But other than that I cannot say anything in favour of that particular game. It is certainly not what I used to think D&D is.

D20 Modern was never going very strong (which is a shame). But I guess we won't see a D20 Modern 2nd Edition based on Grand Theft Auto any time soon (hope so!), so stay with what you have, buy the rest for a nickel and a dime and game on, bro!

What he said. If you have a game you like, play it. Who cares if it's out of print?

I had friends who rejoiced when 4th edition was announced. They had no intention of switching, and all the 3.x books were being put on clearance. They went on a shopping spree.

true i can still use the books i have but its hard enough to find players here let alone persuade them to play a dead and unsupported game which they an no longer buy. you may be able to buy them cheap over there but as soon as a game is out of print here the prices tend to go up, or they just vanish off the shelves completly.
anymore people got views on what 4th edition is like? from what ive heard so far ill deff be giving it a miss, problem being it seems to be one of the few rpgs actually played in scotland. there are some games which sell well here but tend to be bought just to be read not played such as rifts, pendragon, cthulhu tech etc
you guys in the states dont know how lucky you are to have the level of rpg playing and support that you have.

This being a Conan forum and all, but: Great Britain should be the Warhammer FRPG capital, or am I wrong? Dark Heresy?

I mean I am German and have a gaming group going about every Sunday since 1983 - and with me there are still two of the old gamers in it ( a total of 6 to 7 gamers including gm if everybody has time).

And even if that would not work out any more I could probably join or found a new group very soon ... like next week or so. And I don't mean that I have to rub shoulders with 14 to 16 years olds or college students - adults in their 30s and 40s.

There are more around than you probably think ... even in the hills of the Scottish Highlands ... they are probably just hiding ... or cattle raiding ...

I guess this is as good a thread to introduce myself as any:

Hi folks, I just bought a big bunch of Conan RPG stuff from a friend of mine, who doesn't use them anymore (he uses Harnmaster rules for Conan, go figure. )

Anyways, I am happy to get them, and there certainly is a whopping load of published material already, so I wouldn't care even if there never was another new Conan release. Not that I would not buy one, what I mean is Conan already got great support, more than most RPGs.

And even discontinued stuff is pretty easy to get from LGSs, eBay or whatnot. I actually hope Conan won't be made into 4th edition version, because that would mean stopping the support for this version, right? And what little I have read of the 4th edition, it doesn't sound ideal for Conan, far from it. So WOC can keep their creation as far as I am concerned.

In fact I am planning of implementing parts of the Conan system to my homebrew campaign which relies heavily on Freeport material.

As to myself, I have been playing RPGs with my group nearly 20 years, with me and couple of players having been along from the start. We play loads of games, like WFRP, Star Wars (WEG), Conspiracy X, Harnmaster, GURP (various), Call of Cthulhu, MERP (crikey!) etc. etc. I GM some of these, other players the others. As you may imagine, we don't get to play the same game very often, so there can be rather long pauses between certain RPG sessions. But we try to play what each GM feels like playing at the time.

Our contact with D20 has been minimal so far, but Conan will change that, and from that I intend to move to Freeport alongside Conan. I thought briefly about introducing Freeport ot Hyboria, but I got so cool idea for the Freeport campaign, and it really requires another type of world with a more renaissance feel, firearms etc... but enough about that!

hmmm just relised that the secrets of skelos isnt the complete list of spells i had hoped for, the sea magic stuff out of pirate isles isnt in it, so what else has been left out? i am getting tired of this mongoose just print it all in one book instead of trying to force us to buy more books
