Still waiting on mine since early November...

Drop me a line at msprange@mongoosepublishing.com, and we'll see what has happened - you should have received it by now.

Thanks Matt - I've sent you an email with my correspondence from Mongoose.

I was thinking about getting Return to the Road of Kings, but after hearing a lot of gripes about 2E books, I probably won't. People are also complaining about the Lone Wolf Books. :x

I am not having any issues with my copy of Return to the Road of Kings. IMHO you are safe purchasing it.

Also, I think anyone who would like to see more of the Black Kingdoms will be pleased with Return.

I don't have the book either, but Mongoose has now learnt and made progress in printing process.

In fact the only issue I have is with the B/W printing.
I thought it was a progress when Wizards released its books in full colors some years ago and many companies followed up this trend.
Now wizards keeps up publishing full color books but Mongoose regresses back to Black & White.
Some people say color would have cost more but I don't think that today (and with modern technologies) color books are truly much more expensive than B/W printing.

From what I remember from similar conversations, it's not just about printing costs. Artists get paid more for colour than for black and white, so that's a factor as well.

Back and white is fine for me, as long as it's strong black text on clear white background. The same goes for art - give me clear lines. Greyscale is a nightmare.

The best illustrated roleplaying books I've ever seen are the old B&W Realms of Chaos books for WFRP/WFB - twenty years old and nothing today in colour or B&W touches them in terms of art quality and setting atmosphere.

Regards

Robin

There you go, Warhammer realms of Chaos was fantastic visually (and wonderful when I was a WHFRP player). THe quality of the artwork and fine detail rivaled that of Albrecht Durer (look him up, if you don't know).

Dürer rocks! And Gustave Doré as well. 8) Let's get a Resurrect spell going and put those two back to work!

I recently ordered and received a copy of Conan 2nd Edition from Amazon. There were no binding problems, whatsoever.

Eh, yes they are. Once you start bringing in color process, you are dealing with more expensive ink due to the pigments. The cost difference can be quite a bit depending upon how many colors and such. Add in 420 or so pages worth per item and I'd expect quite a price hike in the printing job.

Got mine from a dealer in the UK last week - fell apart before i had even finished my 1st trial character.

Talk to msprange about it. He'll replace it with one of the new ones from the current binding process. You probably picked up one of the first run batch. Mine had had binding issues too, but msprange replaced it for free with the latest run. No binding issues.

Given what you all have seen with the BW illos and layout, etc. in the 2E core rulebook, do you think that the (presumably forthcoming) PDF will be more printer-friendly than the 1E was?

I must honestly say that I am VERY disappointed with the black and white interior of this book. I just got it today and was expecting it to be in full, glorious colour (as the 1st edition had been), and was greatly dismayed at what I found: not only black and white, but very dark. For what I paid for this, I would have expected colour. I'm very, very upset. Not to mention the sub-quality binding. I thought that the 2nd edition would be an upgrade, not a downgrade. The beautiful colour artwork from the 1st edition that is reused in the 2nd is now black and white. It really bothers me for some reason. I also ordered the Tower of the Elephant module and that was B&W too! I'd rather the prices be put back to what they were if it means having colour!

I had fully intended on buying Return to the Road of Kings, the Player's Guide, and the Bestiary, and perhaps many more, but I will seriously have to rethink that now.

At least if I had known what I was buying, I would not be so upset.

I don't like to post negative stuff but my copy of RttRoK finally arrived today. I ordered it direct from Mongoose Publishing as soon as they were available. I emailed a week ago to chase it as it was taking a while and I was advised that they had run out and would have another batch shortly and would send my copy then.

As I said it arrived today and it has a warped cover just like my copy of the main rulebook. There is nothing else wrong with it but the cover curves out from the book!! I must say I am very disappointed that despite all the assurances from Mongoose that the printing problem has been sorted out it so obviously hasn't as this their newest book from the newest batch direct from Mongoose themselves has the same problem!

It really concerns me that Mongoose are either genuinely convinced that the problem is sorted and are oblivious to the quality of the copies they are sending out or that they don't consider warped covers to be an issue. I know they will say I can send my copy back and they will send me another but this came direct from them after they already assured us the problem was sorted. It is also hassle.

This problem is also particularly worrying when here in the UK most people buy their RPG books from independent retailers over the internet and so don't have the opportunity to see the quality of the item themselves...I certainly would never buy a book with a warped cover in a shop. It is a pain to have to return an item in order to have it replaced especially when there is no guarantee the replacement will be any better as Mongoose believe the problem sorted.

All in all a big disappointment. I have been quite excited about the upcoming Conan and Traveller books but to be honest I'm reluctant to purchase any more Mongoose books without being able to see the books first and my local RPG shops just don't stock much Mongoose stuff. In this day and age where so many RPG companies come out with amazing quality books (Solomon Kane RPG, Hollow Earth RPG, WFRP, Serenity RPG...to name a few of the books I've bought over the last year) Mongoose are falling well short of the mark...and as, unfortunately, I, like most people, only have a finite amount of money to spend on RPG books they risk losing customers.

That's the main problem of our hobby, pal. Gaming shops are slowly disappearing, replaced by internet retailers. We wanted to get our games without moving our fat asses from the computer chair, we were greedy enough to buy on the web rather that at our local retailer just to save a few bucks, and some would go as far as downloading illegally their books. Now, we are complaining about quality issues. Man, we got what we deserve...
