Comments/Question on Magic of Glorantha

Hi all

Just finished reading Magic of Glorantha. Excellent book! Really a top notch expasion of mostly new Gloranthan material. The information provided on the dragonspeaker cults and martial arts was well written, and evocative. The chapter on the god learner's was considerably shorter but still quite interesting and useful. The Old Ways and HeroQuesting chapters were the highlights of the book for me. The HeroQuesting chapter goes through most gods in the sky and storm pantheons listing some myths and types of myths associated with each god, sample deeds to emulate in HQs and typical rewards for completing HQs. This information will be valuable to every Gloranthan fan out there. It's well written, and game inspiring stuff. The last chapter on Magicians of the imperial age was also quite good and extremely user friendly. Constisting of detailed descriptions of major NPCs, and how to them into interaction with your PCs. Great Stuff!

Now one annoying point and my two questions for Aaron! The last page of the HeroQuesting chapter lists a bunch of Chaos Gods, among them Kyger Litor, Gorakiki, and Xentha! Question: Is this an editing error? I sure hope so, because if I'm not mistaken these are all Troll gods. And trolls are hate Chaos more than they do the light even! Second question - in alot of the descriptions of the myths gods are described as fight against demons. I've never really encountered demons in previous Gloranthan stuff. Are you meaning Chaos here, and if so why not say chaos rather than demons?

All in all great book just confused on these two points.

thanks

Till Aaron gets here:

If it is written from the Malkioni/God Learner POV, most non-human gods are viewed as chaotic. I believe this point came up during the discussions on Glorantha: The Second Age as well. Those comments are written from the point of view of a Malkioni.

However, Demons can be any entity which serves a rival/enemy cult. It is a catch all for any malign spirit entity that's not obviously something else. However, its particularly used to describe underworld and chaotic otherworld beings especially.

The RQ Creatures book has a small section on what are demons.

Hope this helps!

This'll explain the troll gods thing:

And Chaos 'demons' was a word I used purely for its evocative nature. Technically you could use Chaos 'entities', 'spirits' or 'beings' but I liked describing pure void-creatures as 'demons'. I've seen it used more than once in Glorantha stuff, both in reference to Chaos entities and other spirits that earn the name, such as the Hollri - and in short, I liked the word a bunch. I figured it'd be the word of choice for a lot of Gloranthans.

Hope that helps, dude. Glad you liked the book. :)
