Hi All,

I suggested to my group, that if someone closes in combat with you (i.e. they move in to attack with a weapon 2 or more reach sizes smaller than yours) not only should you not be able to parry, but also your attacks should suffer a 20% penalty as I think it would be "difficult" attacking in such a situation.

Is this fair? What are your opinions?

I am not expereinced in any form of martial art so happy to be corrected but........

I would have thought the opposite was true - you could make desperate parrys with the shaft of a 2HD weapon but would find it much much harder to attack with the weapon as normal - perhaps it becomes an improvised weapon?

Yes I know the rules have it this way but I think the latter is more likely?

I would tend to agree that parries are still possible, I fight with a spear sometimes and you can easily shorten grip and parry, but attacking is a different matter.

The RAW for closing state that the closee (is that a word? I don't think so, but you know what I mean) can't parry against the closer if the closing CA is successful. We play D&D as well, unfortunately, so I was looking at some house rules because we like using miniatures for combat and came up with 20% penalty.

Obviously the PC that uses Long reach weapons thinks this is unfair for a couple of reasons:he can't parry, using a 2H weapon he doesn't get the benefit of the extra CA from using a 1H weapon/shield, mainly.

My thoughts are, that if you can't parry then obviously you are unable to use your weapon effectively in close combat and should suffer an appropriate penalty to your attacks, or use your CA to disengage.

Well it comes down to preference I guess....

Personally I think I will amend my rules to say:

A person with Long Reach can Parry but not attack unless he disengages. This means that the person being closed in on is still at a disadvantage. You could allow attacks at a severe penalty I guess but probably not.

I also think that the extra CA for shield/dual wielding is more trouble than its worth and prefer an extra 1 CA for higher skills. (so if a person has one or more Combat Styles/skills at 90 or more he gets one additional CA - and no more than one for multiple high skills)
