Mongoose
I just wondered who could come up with the cheapest, but still usefull ship, for any imagined purpose.
My cheapest was a 200 ton cargo hauler, with a 120 ton bay, 2 crew staterooms, 4 passenger staterooms and jump 1, costing only 34 Mcr. Cant post stats as they're on the other computer and my usb stick appears to have wandered off...

To be fair, you have to pick a size or everything is out.

I could design a 10-ton ship that would be only a couple million.

Sticking with 200-tons (and jump capable) is a good start.

Let me see what I can do!

Oh yeah  sorry, somewhere between 100 too 600 tons is the best size, sorry... and jump capable, though it depends on your intended use... so a really cheap in system defence ship doesn't need a J-drive etc...

Could use a few more parameters, could be a jump-1 capable vessel for travel between neighboring planets, on the other hand another area may need jump-3 for the same purpose. An in system freight hauler wouldn't need a jump drive, but a higher thrust manoeuver drive could be useful to reduce transit time.

Really, too many variables depending on intended use.

Not sure i would like to be protected from alien intent/piracy/rogue meteors or mother in law visits by... ahem the cheapest system defence boat!

Chef

I was thinking for some backwater planet with little cash that needs protection from... something... but yes parameters...
how about 2-400 ton cargo ships with jump maximum 2, minimum 1, and must have some passenger capacity, for less money than the last poster... or just post it if its under 45 Mcr...
or 1-400 ton System defence boats, with prisoner capacity, weaponry etc, no jump drive for under 60 Mcr, going as low as possible :)
btw this is just for fun, but i may use the SDB's in a game if thats ok

I don't know about "wins." "Costs least," certainly. "Most efficient," probably.

But as a setting for stories and adventures ... nah.

I can imagine it having taupe walls, handholds everywhere because the designer skimped on basics such as grav plates, life support beyond the basics and every means of automated food production, waste processing or any of the amenities.

Chef, just bung in two passenger staterooms and seal them in for the journey, or even just some low berths, thats all i mean by passenger capacity.
And alex, i meant according to current rules, i just wanted to see what people would come up with... i got some weird designs, but i cant remember stats :(... as for settings, what about coming to the defense of a colony that only has a pair of these ultra-cheap defense boats that are trying to hold off pirates (heart of gold, just in space), or the players start out with one of them having been left an old beat up, but very cheapy frieghter, in a will or something, so not at all like the falcon :p[/i]

Oops - this is a repost (messed that up too!)

I assume you are refering to new ship costs - not second-hand, repo'd nor salvage . I'll try the harder one - 400 tons Jump capable under 45 MCr.

So here it is - the non-Falcon freighter -

BRUTUS - MARK II
400 Ton, TL-15, Jump-1 Cargo plus 4-Passenger Hauler

Code:
Crew = 1 Pilot, 1 Engineer, 1 Navigator

Hull-4 (Dispersed) 14.400 MCr
Jump-B (J-1) 15.0 tons 16.000 MCr*
Power Plant-B 7.0 tons 11.200 MCr*
Bridge (Std.) 20.0 tons 1.400 MCr*
Mod-1 0.021 MCr*
                Jump Control/1 0.100 MCr
Crew Quarters (2-dbl occ.) 8.0 tons 1.000 MCr
4 Low Berths (4) 2.0 tons 0.200 MCr
Fuel (1 Jump-1) 40.0 tons 0.000 MCr
Fuel (2wks) 4.0 tons 0.000 MCr
TOTAL 96.0 tons 44.321 MCr

(Cargo 304.0 tons)

With architects fee that comes to only 44.76421 MCr!

You'll note there is no manuever drive (wasn't stated as a requirement) and High Guard rules are used to get this low (pg 42 and pg 52) This is 'by the book' as I understand (or mis-understand) things YMMV...

And you can use half a stateroom for a Working Passage or additional crewmember!

For the back of the bus, rock bottom prices at the expense of cargo capacity and possible carbon emissions - I introduce the...

BRUTUS - MARK III
400 Ton, TL-15, Jump-1 Cargo plus 4-Passenger Hauler

Code:
Crew = 1 Pilot, 1 Engineer, 1 Navigator

Hull-4 (Dispersed) 14.400 MCr
Jump-B (J-1) 15.0 tons 16.000 MCr*
Power Plant-B (Chem.) 9.8 tons 8.575 MCr*
Bridge (Std.) 20.0 tons 1.400 MCr*
Mod-1 0.021 MCr*
                Jump Control/1 0.100 MCr
Crew Quarters (2-dbl occ.) 8.0 tons 1.000 MCr
4 Low Berths (4) 2.0 tons 0.200 MCr
Fuel (1 Jump-1) 40.0 tons 0.000 MCr
Fuel (2wks) 80.0 tons 0.000 MCr
TOTAL 174.8 tons 41.696 MCr

(Cargo 225.2 tons)

Assumes that Chemical Power Plant is at most TL-8 (Fusion is stated as TL-8, so seems chemical would be that or lower).

The only lower I can see (within rules) is -
Berths (Cyro is TL-10 didn't find Berths') - minus 0.05 MCr
Staterooms - minus 0.3 MCr
Jump Control - minus 0.03 MCr

So lowest design at TL-15 max, within rules, new build cost would be with a chemical P.P. 41.316 MCr.

So, with architects fee, this would come to 41.72916 MCr!

What's that? - You want lower you say? -
At TL-16 drop the Jump Drive by 1 MCr.
At TL-17 drop by another 1 MCr.
Passengers - 2 only - 1 working and 1 low berth - minus 0.115 MCr
Assume 10% discount for standard design (and no fee).

So the TL-17, Mongoose legal, bargain basement, limited time special edition, custom standard built, dual-fueled, BRUTUS - MARK III can be yours for only 35.2809 MCr!!!!

Testimonials available upon request from the owners (may they rest in peace) of the Pirate Chow and the Sitting Duck.

J-2 versions may be available for under 45 MCr... (that will be left as an exercise for the reader)!

Enjoy!

What does the pilot do, when there's no M-Drive!! :) :)

(Pray like heck there are no pirates around!)

Meet the Licensed Jump Drive Initiation Personnel requirement, of course!
