Character Conversions

SSWarlock

Mongoose
I'm in the process of converting the skills lists of some MegaTrav characters over to MongTrav and noticed that the Core Book doesn't seem to have the Forgery skill or an equivalent. Am I missing it somewhere?

I'd put it as a function of Admin, computer, or artisan.

If I had to make it a skill, it is a focus of Artist.

Ah! I see what you and DPSteve are saying. Forgery isn't a separate skill but is a task or series of tasks totally dependent on the knowledge area you're trying to commit a forgery in.

That makes perfect sense, especially if one includes a difficulty modifier on the skill task(s) used to create a forgery. Creating a forgery of, say, data requires the character to have in-depth knowledge of the computer system and database(s) that will contain the forged data. Forging a painting requires knowledge of what kind of pigments and painting techniques were used in the target painting.

Very good. Very good indeed. Thank you both.

I agree, I would put it under Art as the skill. Well at least until there is a skill called "Crime" and then make it a specialization of Crime.

I prefer Deception. Its the art of lying in all its forms (including visual), not just a skill pertaining to dexterity.

I'm tempted to call Persuade as well because its definition includes Bribery and Intimidation. However, in such cases, the "victim" is still aware of all of the circumstances. Deception withholds or alters the victim's awareness of circumstances which makes it closer to Forgery.

When I read the first paragraph in the description for Deception, the art of Forgery jumps out all over the place.

Just my 2 cents. 8)

I tend to think of Deception and Persuasion as being interaction-related skills. Broadening them to include replication capability seems to go too far. After all, artists are often paid to do reproductions of masterpieces, and that's not deception. Likewise scientists will go to great pains to get quality "fake moondust", and archaeologists will spend a lot of time learning how to mimic the styles of their target culture -- in many cases that can generate tourist income for souvenirs.

In short, Forgery fits better into capability-related skills.
