centauri question

Mongoose
the centauri have a rather long ship list, so I would hope you could build a competitive force

beyond the starter box, which ships? and how many? should a new player be looking at?

I am just trying to pick my force at present

thanks Talisinbear

You get Raziks and Rutarians in the reinforcements box.
Sulusts and Corvans are the main missing ones.

Buy the two fleet boxes and some extra fighters and you don't lack for much. You might consider a Sulust or two if you don't mind all the "cheese" and "broken" cries from other players and the Corvan is one of the best scouts in the game.

Otherwise an Octurion battleship is nice for big games, but you can do without the rest of the Centauri range.

The two fleet boxes contain nearly every ship in the fleet. The only poor ships included are the Kutais, and that is because they are very fragile (Damage/Crew) and there are lots of better Centauri skirmishers.

You shouldn't hear people complain if you only field a single Sulust or two in the larger games, it is pretty much a one-trick pony that you need to sit back with.

The Octurion is a pretty fine choice for a flagship, as well as being a bit of a monster.

I would not even worry about the Sulust for starters. You can use your centurian as a prefect to fill the roll. It is the Corvan that you need to buy extra.

A single Sulust will work as a consort for a Primus or Octurion as it hasn't got the speed or turns to go out on its own or in a small group. Its intended role is as an escort destroyer, so keep it back with a large ship and use its powerful beam to defend its charge.

I would consider running 1 FAP of Corvans at any given PL level. For example - if you are playing 5 Raid, I would take 3 Corvans and either sullusts or prefects. Although I do like the Centurian.

Problem with that is at war or armageddon level you get a dozen or so Corvans. They ain't cheap, you know, and I'm damned if I'm buying and painting that many of the same class of ship...

Well, given that I won't be playing a lot of games at Armageddon level, not a big issue for me. However since you can split your points, then take 3 skirmish of your choice and 6 Corvans at war level, or 9 Skirmish and 6 Corvans at Armageddon level.

The redirect ability is too useful to not take enough Corvans.

Hi

It appears both boxes, a sulust and 2 corvans cover most needs

I noticed one post talked about additional fighters. I count 84 between the two boxes. How many are needed? I assume you refer to more rutarins raziks, but how many?

Talisinbear

BTW I am now about 75 per cent convinced to go Centaurian, with Dilger and a combined League fleet still having some appeal, although it appears the Abbai whose ships I like are not the useful in combined ops. I was hoping Abbai/Brakai might have worked

My advice is the fleet box and reinforcement box.
Add a sulust, corvan and altarian.

Don't buy an Octurion until Mongoose sort out the casting issues with that ship. I've been waiting since March now for an Octurion hull which isn't a mess

The Adira and Liati are worth it if you're playing bigger games. The Adira is a nice model, but the Liati is a bit ugly

I like both new sculpts

Why I am leaning to Centaurian fleet, the range of models, although I want a deeper purple colour *smile

Interesting the Morgrath and Haven are two ships that no one has meentioned. Both are nice sculpts

The models for both are nice and the Morgrath is even a decent ship stats wise but unfortunately the Haven is one of the worst performing ships in the game so it's very rare to see one on the table :(

The Morgrath has low hull, and frankly there are better ships at the same level. The Haven?
They die, in large numbers, given that they are the Same PL as the Corvan I can't think of a reason I'd take a Haven over a Corvan.
(I mostly FIGHT Centauri - but my opponent would agree, in fact he really hates Havens)
Morgrath is (If memory serves) the only Centauri with Anti Fighter though
