Call to Arms and VaS Similarities?

New to the boards, mainly to try and get an answer to this question:

I have heard that the rules for VaS and ACTA are similar. Is this true? And how?

I've run a few ACTA games and am trying to decide if VaS is right for my historical games.

Also, how hard would it be to create WW1 and Pre-Dread classes of ships in VaS?

Thanks!

Well there's been some talk of WW1 adaption of VAS but I don't think it would be something you could mix with WW2 ships. everything WW1 would be armor 2 to an Iowa...

VAS is a derivative of ACTA. several things are the same, some are just different enough. Instead of Double Damage/Triple Damage, there are Damage Dice. Ships have special traits, there is a small list of special actions, and ships have hull and crew ratings. If you're familiar with ACTA, VAS will take you very little time to get up to speed on.

Thanks. I was hoping that would be the case about the rules.

I wouldn't dream of mixing a WW1 or Pre-Dreadnaught with an Iowa (unless, of course, I could have the Iowa:). I just have a full complement of Span-Am, Sino-Japanese, and Russo-Japanese 1/2400 that I like playing with.

I'll be glad of the similarity. I'll have 4 weeks to learn the rules before the Mongoose tourney, assuming I pick it up this weekend.

I thik you overestimate the technical advances. For example the Queen Elizabeth class of battleship, a statted a credible battle choice, dates back to 1912 and while the guns may have improved I very much doubt the armour could have been easily upgraded.

QE would be one of the most powerful (if not THE most poweful) ship in a WW1 setting. More "run of the mill" types would be distinctly less poky.
