Boresight mod

Funnily enough, we actually came across an accidental boresight in a game on Tuesday. When measuring to fighters, you measure to the edge of the base, and as such, it turns out that there's a fair chance that any fighters doing their attack runs in the front or rear arcs will be boresighted by the appropriate weapons.

The man is German, though...

I understand but his english is very good, he spells most things right and the term "boresight" is everywhere in this thread

Put it this way, if I was mis-spelling in German, I'd want to be corrected

try saying something in German and see if we can correct it, not me personally, my German is aweful.

I think my fiancee telling me my German is rubbish (as well as my Slovak and I only have two months to be able to hold a conversation!) is plenty thanks!

First thanks for pointing out that mistake to me. That one must have slipped trough for a long time now.
I will try to get it right in the future.

I think using Base size (or stem +1") is a very good idea (thumbs up for that)

That would be, "awful". Not sure what it is in German. 0;)

Perhaps he sucked you in and is German is so awe inspiring that it really is aweful. <wink>

Generally (in my group), we use the roughly 1" width of the tape measure to see if something is in boresight or not. If the tape can be drawn directly straight out from the firing ship to cross the stem of the target (or base if you are using a boresight shot on a flight of fighters!)...it is boresighted. Easy as that.

It isn't official by any means, but it generally makes us all pretty happy.

Usually we play

Player One " I bore sight you " move to roughly face the enemy ship

Player two - "ok noted " - often a counter , dice or similar is used to remind.

sorted :)

Yep. We align along the axis of the firing ship as best as possible then place firing/target tokens on the ships. Works well.

Yeah, much as I hate to say it, our group has adopted the idea that there is no such thing as an accidental boresight. You must move after your target and line up on him. This is done to save arguments.

As we would like to include more folks in the games/campaigns/tourneys we are generally not playing with house rules now. Otherwise I think we would adopt the ability to give up your SA slot to reserve a turn (possibly with a CQ check similar to CAF). Half you AD in the larger appropriate arc has also been suggested by the players of the old AoG system.

Our group uses a laser level sometimes for boresight, it works pretty well actually.

Ich bin mude(all i remember from H.S. german, and its probably way spelled wrong)

the tape measure thing made me think that now you'd need a standard size tape measure or your 'boresight' arc would vary depending on the width of the tape measure used...=p

how about ships with fore and aft boresights? we generally play you have to line up on a target thats already moved....would you think it reasonable, given sufficient movement and turning, to line up both weapons if you are at a point on a line between the two targets?

The Mark One Eyeball works pretty well for us, and if it looks close enough for government work we call it good. As long as both sides agree then we avoid all of the techno stuff. ;)

One thing that I love about games that allow for pre-measuring is that it can prevent a lot of the more annoying arguments that crop up in miniatures gaming.

One thing that has proven very helpful comes from the Flames of War rulebook. It recommends that you always declare your intentions (referring to movement only) whenever you move a miniature. We've taken to using this in most of our games. E.g. "I'm stopping 13" from your squadron of Vorchans" or "I'm boresighting your Primus". Everyone agrees when the statement is made (or disagrees and the problem is fixed at once) and the game plays smoothly. No suddenly discovering that you're in range of someone's ion cannons or that you're mysteriously off target for your heavy laser cannon, etc.

It's amazing how gentlemanly a game about blowing each others ships to kingdom come can be when using this method.

Yes indeed. We follow much the same procedure.
