Best scale and miniature range for pre dreadnought actions?

I'm interested in collecting a couple of pre-dreadnought fleets, but don't want to go the Navwar route (the detail was a bit patchy and while they were dirt cheap I would like something a bit nicer).

What would be the best scale? I've looked at some 1/2400 ranges, and I'd like to go with that scale, but if the best range is 1/3000 I'll stick with that.

Any suggestions?

navwar does seem to be a bit marmite - love them or hate them. I love them, but then again I'm willing to forgive (minor) defects! Navwar are bound to do the best range, but you've ruled them out.

Have a look at the Skytrex catalogue and see what their range is like. Otherwise I'm guessing 1/2400 will be the way to go.

1/3000 is the way to go - There are some nice models on the WTJ website http://www.wtj.com/store/ , and the benefit of going with these is that you can use them with Navwar and Skytrex, and to be honest if you want to cover the period properly thereir ranmges can't be beaten in terms of coverage. And the navwar models are, IMHO, pretty good. As in most ranges there are a few "duffers", but in general they are fine (and quite robust). About 95% of my Russo Japanese and Span-Am collection are Navwar.

Might just be the batches I've had. I've got a lot of ships with slight mould misalignments where I've had to file one side down. I will probably go with the WTJ ships.

Is their a UK stockist for them?

I went with 1/2400 Panzershiffe:

Decent detail, but not as pricey as GHQ or others.
