Mongoose
greetings, all!

long-time gamer, but never got into RQ. I've played & reffed plenty of CoC, and downloaded the MRQ wiki. are there any particular sites or the like one would recommend to the RQ novice?

i'm going to use it for my own fantasy world, but would also like a primer on glorantha, if possible

much thanks!

There's a very brief intro to Glorantha here:

http://www.glorantha.com/new/

And lots and lots of more info to be found from there!

- Q

EDIT: Note that much of the info on glorantha.com is about the 3rd Age (whereas Mongoose's Glorantha is 2nd Age), but not all of it.

thanks for the age caveat

holy crow! that's plenty to keep me busy. thanks, quire!

i'll have to nibble away at it until the semester is over

the rules, first and foremost. i've been tired of 3.x/d20/etc. for a while now, so i need a change in fantasy game mechanics. i remember seeing ads for RQ3 in white dwarf back in the 80's and realized that i've never played any version of it (RQ).

i've read leiber's stuff, so the lankhmar stuff interests me too.

i'm interested in glorantha too, but in more of a "armchair travel" kind of way. the setting always struck me as a bit too "mythic hero," almost epic, kind of thing; i lean (heavily) towards the grim-and-gritty side of gaming.

i guess the beginner's question i have for rules would be along the lines of "things to keep in mind when running RQ," stuff that's different from other fantasy systems. no assload of hit points leaps to mind, firstly. . . .

You might be interested in the Taming of Dragon Pass game (early Third Age), chronicled at http://www.pensee.com/dunham/glorantha/todp/ -- we called this "farmer gaming" because it was low-level, and most characters were carving out farms on the frontier.

Or the King of Dragon Pass computer game http://a-sharp.com/kodp/ which is essentially the same thing at a clan level.

the main thing to make runequest really work, especially if you do glorantha, is to treat everyone as real people. Surrenders and flight do happen, since noone wants to die needlessly. Rather than having to fight down the 3 survivors, and possibly loose a friend in hte process, wouldnt you rather accept a ransom of 2000 silver ?

The glorantha 2nd age book is very well written, and it can be played very down to earth. But Lankhmar is an awesome book and a fun world to game in.
