Basing of ACtA:SF models

Just a quick question out to those already using the line of models released with ACtA:SF...

Is the mounting of the ships post and hole, or has anyone successfully mounted with magnets and if so what sort of weight bearing magnet is needed, or what sort of diameter used if the diameter is more appropriate than the weight bearing capacity?

Thanks
Tim

Quite a few of us use these with our ACTA NA & B5 ships. I haven't had any SF ships yet, but no reason why they shouldn't work.

Stands supplied with new ships are superb.

In theory they are the post and whole type, problem with them usually is either they don't stick in the ship or you glue them in and then the stands break off whilst packing them away.

New ones use a 2 part ball and joint arrangement. The small joint is glued securely and relatively unobtrusively to the bottom of the ship, the ball is glued to the top of the "post".

Works great and may be attached and unattached at will.

I prefer not to glue the ball to the post. The ball is a tight fit in the socket - in fact, using the same bases for my "Babylon 5" models, I had to file the ball carefully to get it in, especially if the model is to pivot. It's tricky because too much filing makes the ball too loose and the model pivots when you don't want it to. But if the ball is tight enough to prevent that, it's also tight enough that taking it in and out of the socket repeatedly risks damaging the socket. So I leave the ball where it is and take the post out of the ball when transporting the model.

With those caveats, I do like these bases. And for ACTA:SF, they should be useful for depicting a ship which is either running adrift or a hulk. Remember how in ST:TOS, ships were shown to be dead in space by having them at an angle? The pivoting stand should make that easy!

I've been mounting mine with magnets glued on top of the post (after cutting it down a bit) and glued on the bottom of the ship. I think the size used on everything from FF to DN is 3/8" since the resin is light enough to not require heavier magnets.

I also have been putting everything CA and under on a small base as it just looks better to me.
