Babylon 5 - Wacky Races (Coming soon to Aldershot)

Well whilst playing a game of 2ed, Hash surprised us by turning up and was eventually persuaded to play a game (in which he roundly thrashed a crusade EA fleet) but in the aftermath we were discussing tourneys, standard games (for us 5 points raid) but he expressed an interest in doing something different that wasn't just about annihilating your opponent, as satisfying as that is and a bit more of a laugh.

His suggestion?

A Race! Now obviously you'll all be thinking that thats daft and certain ships would be automatic choices coz they are so fast but we were discussing more of an assault course kind of race track balanced to a certain priority level. We have yet to fine tune the rules and set a date but the thoughts from you folks would be welcome

My thought is that hash is a crazy crazy man... but then I have always been inclined to think that :-)

a race involving tests of toughness, speed, agility, firepower.
eg a Var'Nic versus a whitestar in a straight race, your money is on the whitestar, but add in some area effect explosions, a few solid targets that have to be destroyed to progress, and the var'nic suddenly begins to rise to the challenge with it's tougher hull, damage, and weapons..

A Whitestar vs A Var'nic going round a 16 x 12 obstacle course filled with Asteroids, System effects, and lurking fleets plus the ability to fire at the whitestar if it's too far ahead

but we aren't talking 1 vs 1 how about:

Whitestar
Var'nic
Halik
Teshlan
Hyperion
Delphi
Centurion

This would be very much a multi player event ;

I was just highlighting for the purposes as showing why we need obstacles and things. battleships might be more fun than raid, you "could" have a tag race, starting with patrol and working upwards, once your first ship makes it round, your second higher priority ship goes, on a slightly tougher course and so on. Minbari shadows and vorlons would be buggered at patrol!

D'OH!

Yeah we had kinda worked that one out but it is just gonna be fine tuning it, we were contemplating pit stops and the Relay option was also brought up.

Personally Im in favour of a War level Race to start off just to see how it goes and so I can use one of my Warlocks!!!

Also weighting the course should be interesting too

let me know how it goes :-)

The only problem that I can think of is the usual problem with multiplayer games. Everyone will gank the White Star right away, then turn on the next target.

give everyone a "secret" enemy for the game, only they can shoot that particular enemy?

Ah interesting, thats why i opened it up on the forum, for just such suggestions!

Besides, everyone SHOULD gank the the whitestar, meddling ISA!

their is nor reason why everyones secret enemy can't be the ISA... ahem.

Had Hash been watching a particular episode of Stargate SG-1 prior to this idea by any chance? It sounds much fun in any case :P

(the episode is from I think season 6 and is called 'Space Race' (and even if you dont like Stargate its quite an amusing episode that basically has noting whatsoever to do with the rest of the story really :P)

Doesn't something similiar happen in Voyager?

I wouldnt know, since my oppinion of Voyager is best left unspoken ;)

But seriously the SG-1 one sounds EXACTLY like whats being suggested, a course in space with stages designed to test maneverability, shields, defences, weapons, speed, navigation etc etc :)

yup i remember that episode, very enjoyeable

How about developing an alternate crit table?

It would have bad things that happen to ships, as it already does, but maybe toned down a bit - after all, where's the fun in just blasting people in a race?

Also have unexpected bonus items in the crit table as well that could affect the person being attacked, as well as the attacker - if the attacker gets, say, a 6-6 crit on a ship, the attacking ship gets a temporary armour upgrade or something. Not only that, but the attacked ship could receive a speed and a half bonus on its next turn for its troubles.

He might have been playing a Race in CBT. I would recommend looking up the rules for Assault Races (or whatever else they may be called in all their various incarnations) on ClassicBattleTech.com.
