Babylon 5 2nd Edition - Out This Week!

Thanks for the info LastBestHope. Sorry to seem so whiny, but with only so much capital to go around, I want to make sure what I get is something I really need and can use, not just a way to purchase more material. Thanks for the tip to Mr. Weinbrenner, I'll put a hold on that book (if it's coming out, I'm never quite sure about Mongoose's release schedule) until I know a little more about the conversion materials.

Once again, I know a company has to make money to stay in business, I just like to see more effort in expanding the system and creating new things, rather than re-hashing the stuff already out. I like Mongoose's system here, and frankly I love A Call to Arms as well. I just don't want them to become like certain other game companies, especially since I've heard rumor that some folk from another company are now part of Mongoose (obtuse enough for ya?)

Darkness and Light has already been released (the Vorlon and Shadow book), after then for the RPG came the G'Quan ship plans and Merchants Traders and Raiders. That was the last '1st edition' supplement.

posted a similar request about the holes in the conversion guide in the Rulesmaster's forum. I also PM'd MSprange to ask if we would see a fuller conversion document addressing more issues than just ship stats. HE said they were "Working on it".

LBH

Sigh.

They should have been working on a "full" conversion document at the same time they were writing the 2nd edition. And that "full" document should have been what was printed at the end of the rulebook, not the conversion notes we did get at the back of the book. Then maybe they could have legitimately claimed that it's completely compatible with all the old sourcebooks.

I may be only one person, and really, a lone voice from the wilderness, but I have to state again, emphatically, that I will not buy 2nd edition versions of the supplements I already have, and if they start coming out, I will drop the system. I am planning on buying the manual for ship construction, hoping that may have a way to work out updating the ship stats, but I wanted to avoid purchasing Ships of the Galaxy as being duplicated material. Is Ships of the Galaxy a second edition source anyway?

You're not the only person who feels that way.

This is what irritated me about the so-called "Full Season Guide." Here MSprange was saying they weren't going to be redoing the 1st edition books we had spent lots of money on over the past 3 years and they wouldn't even need to be re-done so soon, and yet one of the first books to be released was a 2nd edition version of the season guides. Which we had to wait for one by one originally. Thank goodness it's been removed from the schedule and is nowhere in sight for the time being.

And while "Ships of the Galaxy" isn't strictly a re-print, it does redo all of the ships from the 1st edition books. I can see them re-doing some of the books several years down the line, but that is years, maybe 3 or 4 at the earliest. So like you, if Mongoose starts puting out 2nd edition versions of the books I already have (anytime soon that is) I won't buy them.

Why's that a good thing? It's not a 1st edition supplement, it's a 2nd edition one

Given that the relevant rules from the original season guides have been rolled into the main rulebook, and all season 1 background has been dropped, at the moment, if you buy the 2nd edition, to get all that you have to buy the season books plus the first edition rulebook to get that information.

Personally, I love the idea of a book that is mainly just background and as little d20/OGL rules as possible, much more relevant to how I've been playing the setting...

I think you misunderstood what I was saying. I don't need or want a 2nd edition season guide. That's why it's a good thing.

It's a good thing for you, not for people who come in to the game via the 2nd edition. Unless you want them to try and buy the 1st edition of the RPG, which will likely be going OOP now that 2E is out.

Well don't buy it

Unlike me and LBH you're obligued to buy something that's on Mongoose's B5 release schedule ;)

Its not like they just give use stuff for kicks you know.. we do have to work for it :)

I'm glad my post on here has at least got everyone talking about the effect 2nd edition has upon all of us that bought the 1st edition. Mongoose needs to remember that those of us who bought all the 1st edition materials are probably the most die-hard of the fans. We're the ones who got all this stuff from the moment it came out, and we'll the ones who'll continue to support it as a viable role-playing platform in the future. We also should be taken into account. If you do release a further edition, I understand that the new players need material for their second edition. But, please, do not forget or abandon your original supporters. A second edition book I would definitely purchase would be a conversion guide. As I stated, once I get a straight answer, I will buy a Ships of the Galaxy, if, and only if, it has all the ships and they are all updated for 2nd edition. The Babylon 5 universe has a whole galaxy of aliens, ships and cultures to explore. If you want to expand your product line, add those aspects to the game. Don't keep going back and redoing the whole line every 3, 4, or even 2.5 years. Other companies, who will remain nameless, pull that, and that is not the good business they think it is. Leave it alone and go forward.

The rant is now concluded.

I'm pretty sure msprange once said "Ships of the Galaxy" would include every single 1st edition ship pictured and updated to 2nd ed. rules. Whether or not Mongoose actually lives up to that promise is another thing completely.

Every 1st edition shiop is a tall order, and I'll check them, I have every printing of every B5 RPG supplement at least once!

give them time...not to step on anyone's toes but I don't think posting about it every other day will get it done any faster. Its a BIG book.

Well I believe they said the week of, then the week after, and they haven't really put out much more, so allow me my griping as I don't like being a mushroom when I am trying to spend money on them :)
