Another Newb question

Technically, the revised set does have all the changes introduced in SFoS, for example the 1D6 damage table intead of 2D6. It just doesn't have the new stuff.

Yes it is a deceptive description, we're all in agreement with you here :) And annoying that there are so many books to flick through to find the right rule, not to mention the expense. This is one of the main reasons that 2nd edition is coming out, it will jsut be the one box set then and no other books.

yeah i asked mongoose if id need SFoS and i got told that i didnt need it for the split EA and if no one else that id play against used the SFoS book then i didnt need it - they didnt mention about the extra fulls and new fleet lists though, it was all a bit misleading.

hmm, i remember buying the revised set at release, and then complaining to Matt about the wording in the description, he offered me a free copy of SFOS, and told me they would clarify the wording. I guess they never clarified the wording. ( I also never took the SFOS copy as i had already bought it by the time I got my reply)

Take it now and give it to On_DS9!

You know, I'll be honest, it's not so much about the money. I'm no longer a poor college student and $35 won't kill me. It's the fact of where does this end? Does this mean that everytime Mongoose releases a 25-30 book, I have to get it to have the current rules? So after a couple years of 2e, I have to carry around 2-3 books to play a current game? If a new player wants to get into the game, they now have to spend $75-100 like I did just as a buy-in cost to have the most modern set of rules? Is Mongoose going to be deceptive there as well and contonually push that "all people need is 2e" to play the game when in reality they have spend twice what they thought the original buy-in was.

In truth what bothers me is not the price tag, but rather knowing the price tag up front. I thought it was $50 and the rest was optional. In truth, the price tag is twice that amount. So at this point, I'm almost to the point where ACTA goes on the shelf and I don't promote it to other people in the area. Frankly, there's enough games out there that I can be choosy about what I play and I don't have to play a game of a company that has been deceptive. I'm trying to decide whether or not to do that.

So I've played a couple more games, and figured I'd add my more balanced assessment:

I like the game, mainly because I'm a huge B5 fanboy. I find it more enjoyable to play as I play more of it (despite my gripes about Stealth).

I'll probably pick up 2e when it comes out, but having to take the whole mini-library of rules right now means I'm not able to really play in any events in the cons in the area, because my spending is on hold until I see what 2e looks like.

So for now, feeling less surly, but also a bit sad that I can't throw myself into the game with my usual vigor.
