An argument over a few B5 universe ideas...

One thing that really bugged me from the Technomage trilogy - Sheridan wouldn't have been able to crash the whitestar into Z'ha'dum without Galen's help. Puhlease!

That entire sequence in the (otherewise great) set of books had my bollocks-ometer going off quite a bit. The author was trying too hard to intermingle continuity when it just wasn't necessary.

In a case like that, the burden of knowing that is not on the author, but the licensor; the licensor has to give final approval, etc. on the book, and is expected to be familiar with the canon so that they can spot violations. (In the case of Star Wars, it's multiple people with a centralized database; in the case of Star Trek, whose canon consists of just the episodes and not the books/games/etc., it's just one person. And I have no idea how B5 handles is. :p)

Ah, if that is the case then it all becomes crystal clear! :D
The B5 Licence is owned by Warner Brothers, and Matt himself has posted here that they have stated that everything Mongoose produces will be canon! End of argument!!

Of course, then you get into how it handels the conflicts with other sources.

I go with the canon scale posted on page 1.

And to think I opened the thread looking for comments on my Dilgar War idea...

Just to re-emphasise the point of this thread - to discuss possible ideas for a series setting in the B5-iverse, not to spend all of our time arguing over canonicity.

Hi!

Curious to see that there seems to be a divide between B5 fans who follow just the novels and series, and those who take in the games also. I wonder how they will take the Mongoose-published novels...

I guess we the part about another series or the Dilgar war wasn't immediately obvious. We just took it that you were asking about canonicity.

It's ok, but if you feel like commenting on my Dilgar War idea - or any other you see there (or in your own mind!) feel free to post!

On the original topic I had a similar idea and decided to write a fanfic set in the Dilgar War.
currently at 300,000 words and going strong, and I haven't even got to the good bits yet :)

There's a huge amount of potential for a character story and perfect for all action Role Playing. We know what happened in the war but not exactly how and why, and it's that grey area which creates a good story.

LC, as far as I am concerned, your fanfic will be canon for me. That's one great read! Please don't stop.

Going even more OT: Your fanfic inspired me to build up Dilgar and EA fleets for some ACTA action, btw.

Yep, LC's work is pretty stellar!

The problem is that he's stolen so much of a march that it would be hard to figure a way of bringing something unique to the table when writing about the Dilgar War... grr.

(Note the grr is in jest!)

Looks like you should start another thread....
Theres a whole lot of nerdiness going on here. If it says Babylon 5 on the front with permission, then it is Babylon 5. All part of the continuity. "Cannon" or "canon" is a bad word.
If you still nag about it just remember Crusade. Thats cannon. I'd say a lot of the non-cannon material is better than this.
While we're at i lets run around with ligthsabers and "non-cannonise" Star Wars.
If you don't like it then don't use it.

But some of the earlier Channel 4 novels, which are labelled as Babylon 5 product contradict establishied on screen canon.

So it's not quite so simple.

And 'In the Beginning' contradicts on-screen canon.
Ah, but In the Beginning is merely a story told by Londo. Contradictions in ItB are therefore mistakes (or deliberate changes) made by him, no more. :)

And one I gleefully used in Darkness and Light. And Psi Corps for that matter. Largely reliable narrators, but with enough wriggle room...
