Alien Module 1: Aslan

Golan2072

Cosmic Mongoose
Just got it today, by airmail. While I haven't read it yet in detail, overall it looks good, not to mention including a lot of details about the Trojan Reach sector, two sectors from which were in CT's A4: Leviathan, a very interesting adventure...

Hmmm... Every Aslan character gets only one chance to succeed at applying to a career (which is connected to the Rite of Passage), and if he or she fails, they become outcasts. The chances for becoming outcasts seem a bit high, then, especially given the consequences of becoming one.

Perhaps you can pardon my ignorance, but given how traveller is somewhat human-centric, doesn't being an 'outcast' in they eyes of the Aslan ruling body/culture make it a bit easier to have an Aslan player character? I mean if your culture considers you an outcast, why wouldn't you take on the life of a lowly space adventurer/explorer/etc?

Yep, this rule indeed seems to come from this line of thought. However, if I were to play a more Aslan-centric campaign (which this book makes me want to play or run), this rule will probably have to change.

Not necessarily. I thought Aslan culture was very clannish - if so, one person's outcast is another person's new recruit. Just a thought.

true, and it does fit into the pack/pride hunter mentality of most carnivores on earth (and i am aware of the fact that the Aslan only pass a glancing resemblance to any terran species, but it is a different mindset to the social groupings of the more omnivore ape communities)

The thing is that the MGT Aslan rules seem to treat the Outcast status as a more or less permanent thing (unless you roll certain events) rather than a temporary stage in the Aslan's life. I'd house-rule that after a term as an Outcast, an Aslan may attempt to apply to any other career in another clan, but even if he or she gets accepted, they'll have to start from Soc 2 and climb up by acquiring land and honor...

Aaah! That's cute. :D
Is that Aslani male or female? That will color their POV on the sourcebook.

It's funny that I just logged in to see what's the status on the Aslan book, and I found this thread. I take FLGS will be getting it soon?

There seems to be a wording problem with the rite of passage, in one paragraph it implies that it essentially you can try again abiet with a different clan after 4 years, and in another it imples it is permenant.

otherwise an excellent supplement

That's a cute pic...

I just got my copy in the mail today and damm, I wasn't thinking about how big this would be (I didn't think about the page count and price equalling "big hardback and the largest Traveller race book ever") I got this in with Hammer's Slammers, Agent, and some other Mongoose stuff so I'm going to be on a reading binge until I cover it all.

Suggested House rule:

If the character fails the initial qualification role, he must serve either as an outcast or an outlaw for 1 term.

If he serves as an outcast rather than an outlaw, they may have a chance of redemption with another Clan's ihatei, roll for qualification against Wanderer, if successful this counts as initial qualification. After at least 3 terms you may take another career as normal.

You have essentially been adopted by the new clan, you must relinquish any territorial claims prior to your adoption.

By the way yet another Aslan female has decided to sit on the book to demonstrate how Aslan look like:

It looks like that one is trying to hide the insider information. It also looks like she has her claw out to start shredding it.
