ACTA Tourney Secret Santa Style

Okay, so our gaming group has been looking at running a small tourney for the locals, but we have been struggling with the format...well because some group members are prone to whining about, oh any old thing.

Anyhoo, i was talking to a guy about another game where 20 percent of your forces were chosen by your opponent, and keeping with the holiday spirit it just hit me.

So all you players put their name in a hat, and the person you draw, you design a fleet for to be used in the tourney, taking into account pre decided breakdown and account for models or counters the person owns etc...

That way you never get a fleet of saggitarii, or any other rude asshat list that people are prone to come up with

Please feel free to rip asunder...

cheers

are you implying the rongoth is a bit crap..... see my torpedo varient, only a house rule but means a nice mdel can get used

You might run into a problem with people chosing the absolute worst ships possible from the lists.

true but if everyone does that for everyone then all the fleets will have the worst models possible and could make for an interesting tourney :D

I could see this working IF everyone had access to multiple ships from their specific fleet. ...However... Theoretically, someone could have ONLY Sagittarius models and you are left with the choice of Sagittarius or Sagittarius (for example). Also, if someone's fleet is the ISA, Vorlon or Shadows, then you will not have enough choices to pick out their fleet.

That is the whole point, you must play with the crap you are given, not every admiral has first choice as to what ships are in his fleet

This person is not in the tournament and gets a smack for being a cheese meister, we have been over this, move on.

huh? how do shadows/vorlons/isa not have enough choices to pick a fleet. They just dont have crap choices that you could lay on them.

Regardless, the point is to choose a well balanced fleet (in your opinion), just not a fleet that the other person may choose, spicing up the play a little

A possible idea, if all players are up for it, kinda like a double Secret Santa:

Everyone puts their lists on a sheet. Lists are given out randomly. Everyone makes a fleet list based on what they are given. Fleet lists would have the owners name on them.

Then, the fleet lists are mixed and everyone picks out a fleet to play at random.

You then play with that persons fleet.

Not sure how well it would go over, but it throws a lot of randomness into it. If everyone is alright with sharing models and playing with other fleets. Since there is a chance you could end up with any fleet, you will want to make them good.

And it gives players a chance to play with different fleets.

Agreed with l33tpenguin, so long as people don't mind others using their miniatures (which they may).

As for giving others the chance to pick your fleet from your miniatures - when I first put together fleets, and I always put a new fleet together for a tournament, I only assemble and paint the bare minimum number of ships to make a viable fleet (to save time and money). The problem here is that if I were to enter, then my opponents would have no choice over what I took - I'd get my optimal fleet every time (not a cheese fleet though) and there's nothing anyone could do. If I played this against a single Bin'Tak and a G'Sten or a Poseidon and Delphi then I think I'd have a hard time losing!

An alternative would be for other people to provide you with a list of ships from your fleet that are available, say seven points worth at raid, then you get to pick your actual fleet from those ships. Means you can still tailor your fleet to your playing style to some extent, but don't have free reign to pick whatever you want.

Certainly not having a completely free choice over the ships you have to work with is more realistic. The best campaign we've done here was a narative campaign where the players didn't get to pick their ships at all, just had to make do with whatever was available. Made for some interesting battles/games.

for a proper secret sant tourney you could just do it with counters as long as its a just for fun thing.

I think it would be amusing to have a tourney of the most sucky fleets man can build (8 ship limit of course).

possibly some house rules on buying ships no higher than the PL above as well so everyone doesnt end up with one warship and one raid.

I wonder how many Raiders Nova with an Admiral plus 2x strike carrier fleets there would be
Nah, four wings of Delta-V fighters for extra giving-away-VPs goodness!

Ah good one but I think I got it beat... 20 wings of breaching pods

Although I have to ask, who has 20 breaching pod figures?

Incidentally the gaim presented a problem with the number of breaching pods they can have, so I found a cheap answer for modelling them. Pistachio nut shells! mount them on upside down drawing pins, paint them up to match the gaim fleet and they pretty good on the table. Worked for me anyway.

There you go, after Christmas, pretty much anyone has 100 breaching pod minis

Nice idea on the Pistachio nut shells, Nightmares about Minbari. Very 50's pulp science fiction, "The giant insect pods that came from outer space"

Never liked the fact that all the races use a std boarding pod model anyway, but had higher priorities to work on.

Only problem is my wife thinks I am already crazy on the crap I collect and keep for "building models" but Pistachio nut shells might put her over the edge. [off to the supermarket then]
