GW has an astounding number of horrible looking miniatures out there. And a handful of totally awesome ones... As for the faces: Paint their visors opaque! On a standard battlefield where you have lots of external light and no internal light of the visor... How likely is it you'll actually be able to see into it? Especially if it's mirrored or designed to cut down on light glare levels. It's like windows at night in a bright room. Seeing out of them is really difficult unless there's light on the outside as well. Personally I paint all my visors red or green. Red because it doesn't ruin your night vision. Green because it's a color which normally will not damage your eyes even if the brightness level spikes massively.

Painting visors opaque because you like the style is one thing, but you shouldn't have to do it to cover up a poor sculpt. If that's where this is going then why bother w/ faces at all? They could just sculpt the visors in and cut out the anatomy all together.

I have purchased a great deal of SST miniatures. I have a full company and a colony level 3 force. (yes, I am nuts but I do get into alot of games with it so it is where my spare cash goes).

I have not purchased a single skinney model. I was looking forward to getting a force that would match up to either of my existing armies. As I see it, there are a few major points against my doing this.

1.) Methane breathers with open face masks or no helmets. (all my mi have helmets - I even replaced the head on the sicon agent)
2.) Inconsistant design - skinneys with human feet.
3.) GW style poses - the giant mishapen fist on the one leader is a perfect example.
4.) Human slaves without enviromental protection on alien worlds.

SST appeals to me because of the elegant rules and the hard sci-fi feel to the game.

I do not like magic in space and I stopped playing 40k as soon as rogue trader was replaced/upgraded and spacehulk was dropped.

Mongoose has the potential to really win with the skinneys, but, as it stands now, my dollars are waiting for the forth. If the forth are anything like the skinnies, I will spend it on a different game system.

I vote with my money, but, Mathew-S has been open and honest with us so I am being open and honest back to him. If they want my business, they need to change their current methods.

best regards

Dalton

Ilushia, what you're saying here amounts to "the sculpts suck, so cover them up." I don't think that's the answer. Yes, on the REAL battlefield your points are spot on...but this is a game. And many of us (me included) like to paint faces. Is it realistic? No. But is a GW Space Marine without a helmet realistic? No.

This is a game that needs to attract people's dollars, euros, pesos, pounds, marks, whatever. Being a relatively new entry into the arena, consumers will judge the game FIRST by what the mini's look like...and compare them to what else is out there. The minis are the hook that get people interested in the game, not the rules or the elegance of game play.

How many people have embraced SST by reading the rules first...then looking at the minis? Most of us who post on this forum are hard-core fanatics, so I dismiss us: I bought my first box set shortly after release because I've been in love with the novel since I first read it. I was willing to overlook and deal with the assembly issues. But, I'm not the average consumer.

Look at the poll results so far: a clear majority of us hard core SST fanatics want new sculpts. That speaks volumes more than I can.

Regards.

The 'GW has awful models' attitude a bit unfair. You can't seriously say that the Skinnie range has been better executed than the Vostroyan range, like them or not.

Let's drop this whole stupid subject, ok? :?

Look here at What Matt has said, should make you feel better. :D

It's NOT a stupid subject, IMHO. A majority of poll respondents would seem to agree.

Were these "new acceptance" protocols in effect for the Slaves????

Did someone say GW had a "handfull" of good sculpts?
That's just a fanboy delusion, they've been in business long enough that it'd ber two handfulls at the very least!
Adaquate is how I'd describe most of the skinny releases, some are below that level. Saying otherwise is a straight denial of the facts, take a look at what other people are producing!

As for the faces being difficult to do, thats crap, it's part of the job. I can't land a helicopter, hence Im not a pilot. Difficult or not its part of the job description.
And like alot of poeple have said (me amongst them) there are alternatives, such as hassle free heads if it really is a stumbling block.

As for the startrek/skinny thing I kinda realised when I was lying down to sleep last night that clearly most of the artwork wouldn't have pictures of the feet  but wouldn't they be working of the concept sketches we were shown? Most of those had the feet clearly shown, of course they were universily slated so maybe not...

Oh I don't think its a stupid subject either OldSoldier.
BUT I do believe mongoose is listening, those ducks for runequest seem to be a LOT better than those broo. Also they dropped the awful concepts for the skinnies (I hope), have started showing the greens, hiring new sculpters (even turning down sculpters I view as being pretty damn good, which hopefully means the bench marks pretty high) etc. I commend all these efforts, and am in no way quite as anti mongoose as I must appear!
The only problem is its taken so long, and taken alot of people saying the same thing for it to happen. If only this stuff had happened before the skinies were put in production... Only the brutes can save the species now!

No, but by using the word stupid, I got your attention.

I've got question acutally :D
Are the folth the mechanical race we heard about?
Or can we still hope for some hella cool shiznit, like the scorpian robot in that bubble gum crisis comic by that Warren chap?

Ok, how about this for a new race (This I do actually think would make a cool miniatures line) an inteligent plant species that infests planets, with like.... tendrils and stuff? Connected to each other in the same way that different species in the rain forrest are connected by strands of fungus this insideous green menace creeps slowly ever onwards towards its goal of universal dominance. Maybe once an entire planet is infested/it reaches critical biomass it achieves true sentience, and sends forth spores to pollinate further planets. Yeah there troops would be really cheap to make up for the fact that they can't move...
See thats just of the top of my head! (Although clearly derrivative of many things... like sid meirs alpha centauri)

Aaaactually the Forth is fairly mechanical race, but there's hints of worse... much, much worse.

Oh right. I was hoping for a true machine inteligence. Perhaps they were terraforming devices sent out by another race (like Asimovs robots) or maybe a virus that achieved sentience and infects other devices...
Or maybe all machines once they achieve true sentience are in contact with other such machines using their vast intelects, like Wintermute at the end of Neuromancer....
You know something like that, living out in the cold void of space needing neither air nor water, turning their cold analytical minds towards the destruction of all weak flesh in the univers...

Actually, my friend, there's a weee-bit worse. I'm not sure if Matt's said anything here about it..but it's a fairly freaky group of peoples comming.

Wow thats cool! Six races is pretty exciting :D
I think I'll just ignore the skinnies from now on and look to the future!
Although I do really want a slave army, but to be honest I was thinking more along the lines of Mad Max then the direction they seem to have take (Since it mentions in the fluff that its mostly fringeworlds which are raided for slaves....)

It'll be about six by the end of next year....1 light and airy race has been proposed, and the exact opposit... think of it as Classical vs. Grundge.

Edit: Lordy me, my fingers keep typing checks my colladeral cannot back up.

Someone mentioned that Species 472 is supposed to be highly mechanical/cybernetic, as a whole. I forget whehre I saw that now, but it's around here somewhere. Something about how their entire society, basically, is built around cybernetic upgrades to individuals and suchlike. The Coven was supposed to be a matriarcle group of psionics or the like. Something along those lines anyway. It should be interesting to see both, as I could see several different styles you could do both in which would turn out quite nicely.

Thankyou..so I guess I'm free to bander on about them...

Species 472...picture the Borg from Star Trek, the Strog from Quake 4, and the bio-mechanical lifeforms from VIRUS (the movies and comic book series). Grungy, bloody, horribly society who's sole purpose is to consume others in order to survive.

The Coven...when I think about these guys, I picture those annoying Eldar, the Protoss, and another race from Alien Species (Palladium Books). Matriarchal, psychically based, heavilly favoring females over males due to the males lack of psychic powers...

Ok, I just saw something that makes me think we SST players have no right to complain. Has anyone seen the Vorlon sculpts for that B5 game? Ouch. That's rough!

Kudos to whoever first suggested Hasslefree for heads!!!!!!

I got my trial order from them today (head sprues) and I was so jazzed by the quality that I sent in another order for some of their figs, more head sprues, and some accessory sprues!

I'm feeling A LOT better about the possibilities for my Slaves now! :D
