Traveller Map vs Published Works Stats

Hello All,
I was wondering if the system information on Travellermap.com is officially used or canon for the Mongoose Traveller universe, or the system information in published adventures are to supersede the Travellermap database website? Perhaps, they should be the same, and there is an error?

It is pretty well-established Canon from published material over the last 50 years. The system entries in the wiki have the sources listed. There are specific sectors set aside for home brew and non-canon entries should be labeled as such. Since it is not an official resource there can be errors and issues with newer material. There are folks more familiar with it than me who can probably give a bit more info.

If there is a published resource that is different, call it a library error and choose the one that fits your universe. There are centuries of history there.

TravellerMap was in communication with Marc Miller (et al) for a long time as all of the prior stats for the worlds of Charted Space in published materials (and their variations) were being vetted and brought up to T5 Standards (and obvious quirky UWPs were definitively dealt with). This process was called the T5 Second Survey (T5SS) after the Imperial IISS Second Survey of 1065 of the Charted Space Setting. The data on Traveller Map was given to Josh (inexorabletash) from Marc and Company as a dataset on a sector by sector basis as it was reviewed and vetted and brought up to consistency and T5 Standard. Mongoose was publishing alongside T5 for most of this time, but did not always have (or its authors did not always use) the most updated T5 datasets drawn and vetted from the entire history of Traveller publication.

Nevertheless, Traveller Map has in some cases since updated some of its world data to reflect some Mongooose publications, especially since Mongoose's acquisition of the Traveller trademark property.

If you go onto Traveller Map from a desktop web browser, you can do one of several things:

OPTION #1:
  • In the upper right corner of the map, choose the drop-down under the three horizontal lines:
    • Choose the "Gear" icon along the top at the left
    • Select "Dim Unofficial Data" at the bottom of the drop-down
OPTION #2:
  • Click at random on an empty region of any Sector, and look at the lower-left corner of the webpage, and it will display the current status of the data for that sector:
    • "Traveller 5 Second Survey" - (Author Name) »» THIS IS OFFICIAL DATA
    • "In Review" »» The data is currently undergoing the T5SS vetting process, and may be in the process of sequentially changing
    • "Unreviewed" »» The baseline data is uploaded and set to undergo the T5SS vetting process, but has not yet started
    • "Unofficial" »» The data is unofficial and is not currently set to undergo T5SS vetting. It is likely a non-canon publication or Fanon
    • "Preserve" »» This sector has been set aside as a "GM's Preserve", and no official data will ever be published for this sector. Any data Published for this Sector is by definition unofficial.
OPTION #3:
  • In the upper right corner of the map, choose the drop-down under the three horizontal lines:
