A New Universe for ACTA's

Yeah, a good relation bodes well for both parties.

One side SFB question: whatever happened to the Master SSD book? Did it get dumped in the end?

In general the SFU background and timeline makes a lot more sense than the Star Trek background, which is subject to a lot more variations in plot, enemy of the week, and general inconsistency.

There is some stuff that doesn't make an awful lot of sense. but the background as a whole is far more coherent in terms of military history than the Star Trek background.

I do want this to be very successful. I do want to play this game. There are plenty of good things about the SFU universe I'd like to see done, but I found the very complicated rules, endless variants and equivalence between fleets a turn off.

I'm hoping the eventually do a module Y conversion (call it birth of the federation or whatever).

Actually I think Birth of the Federation was the name of a PC game back in 1995, good game, but had a severe memory leak issue that was never fixed.

But yes, I want this is succeed myself this is an amazing opportunity for Mongoose, its a great opportunity for ADB. Its a chance for all us who don't have Law degrees who can't figure out STB or lack an engineers obsessive detailed mind.

P.S. Sorry Steve....

Hopefully Matt is still reading this thread. Regarding licences etc.

Nothing from after TOS/TAS can be included.

Does this include doing S&P articles that covered something in the movies ie WoK?

If so, and random internet people fill in the gaps by adding more stuff that can be used with ACTA:SFU (thus indirectly encouraging people to buy the rules), there's not going to be any come back from Paramount about it, is there, given random internet people wouldn't profit from it?

Once again more information for disscussion purposes.

I don't mind the mutiny / subject races thing too much - it sounds like the empire is more like the Terran Empire from the MU which also had agonisers and pain booths IIRC.

in SFU - do any of the subject races every rise above "crewman" and command their own ships etc?

Yes, eventually... At the start of the General War the Klingons barred Subject Races from reaching Senior Positions of Command in any of their Services. But as the General War raged on things started changing slowly. Subject Races usually could aspire to command Supply Ships and Freighters in the Klingon Empire but after a Decade of constant Warfare and the rise of Attrition Units (Fighters and Gunboats) the Klingons were running out of experienced and trained ship commanders. The first place the restriction on Commanding Combat Craft was relaxed came in the Gunboat Flotillas eventually some subject races rose high enough in rank and experience that they commanded Section and eventually maybe even the Flotilla as a whole. Some of these rare individuals may have made the leap into Frigate Command but anything higher would be extremely rare and almost unheard of.

In the Army on the other hand the chance for rapid promotions came much easier, so to speak. There is a record of at leastt one Sildariian (the big bear looking thing) rising to the rank of General. He started the Battle as a Major.

Mark: wait until you've seen the Hawks the Romulans get - those are some sweet looking ships... although I do still have a soft spot for the original Eagles, the Hawks look mean...

Last I saw the Master Ship Book (The R Section descriptions) was still being toyed with but the idea of a Master SSD Book is going the way of the Dodo. With ADB moving in to the Downloadable PDFs they are just going to go back and release all the SSD books electronically and revise and update them.

I stopped getting SFB stuff years ago (no bugger will play it) but I've got up to module R9 and Omega 4. It's insane how much stuff there is for it.

Just had a thought.

Mongoose D6 will be 1/3200 scale. ADB D6 is 1/3900 scale. Could you use the ADB D6 as a D4?

Did the D3/4s get added to the mothball reserve fleet (and are hence still tootling about in the 160/70s?

Whats so great about Romulans anyway?

Side trip -- the Master Starship Book (not the same as an SSD book) turned out to be a LOT of work. The Hydran part which is currently available took literally months of work as the Steves' writing has evolved and the differences were jarringly obvious as we started combining things.

It isn't a high priority, but it is one of those "someday we'd like to do more work on it" projects. Maybe when I retire and move to Amarillo and can do all the fussy, fiddly things I adore and SVC loathes, we can work on it more. :D

The SSD books are revised as we need to reprint the older ones. It is a painstaking task that Steven Petrick has undertaken since he has to add the "Crawford Boxes," more (and standardized) notes, change all the A Hulls to R Hulls, and incorporate all the errata.

Feel free to join us on the BBS or our page on Facebook to discuss this further.

Thanks - I got the master rulebook and had planned to get the master SSD book too, but I guess I'll have to make do and plug the few gaps in the modules I don't have to get the SSDs...

Where can we get the PDFs from?

With 30 years of material to work from I can only imagine the migraine of getting it all together in a sensible format. Frankly while it probably needs to be done if for no other reason than to get more people interested in it. Its not a job I would want.

Thanks Jean, my post overlapped with yours...

I've signed up to the facebook page and now if I can only remember my forum login...

If I recall, they were (the last I looked in, probably back in 2007), doing both the ships manual and the master SSD book, I thought... ah well...

thanks for the sidetrack - back to the main programme? :)

Ben2, I cannot answer for Mongoose on your question as far as it pertains to their Forum. However, I know that we cannot allow fan-based writing like that on our boards and if we see it elsewhere, we have to report it to Paramount. What they do is their business.

I know that such things cannot be published under ADB, Inc.'s license. I also know that I am far too busy to go hunting up websites that break/bend Paramount's IP. However, if I spot it (someone writes something that names a brash young captain and details his career path and puts the link up on our board or a board I haunt, for example), I am duty bound to report it to SVC.

There are some fights that even if you were to win, you would lose. Taking on Paramount if they decided their IP had been violated and if they had reasonable cause to think so is one of those fights we'd prefer not to fight. You have to realize that Paramount would love to declare this non-expiring license null and void, so we are like Caesar's wife about their IP.

So please, let's not go there. :(

So what races are in the initial release?

Federation
Klingons
Romulans

are a certainty.

What other races are in out of the following?

Kzinti
Gorn
Tholian
Orion

Are all in the basic and advanced sets.

Lyran
Hydran
ISC

Are all big players.

Wyn
LDR
Vudar
Seltorian

Are all minor players.

What races are in FC and Starmada?

To my knowledge there has not been an official announcement regarding the first wave of miniature releases. however we have been promised some "teaser" material shortly to wet our already rabid appetites.

I was wondering why Kirk never got mentioned even though he's in the period covered by the licence.

Well everyone wanting to do conversions will just have to be subtle.

Which brings up a very important point. Kirk's an integral part of the TOS timeline, however I suspect that because he is also in many other movies outside of TOS Paramount gets the "lion's share" when it comes to him. However what about the forums? People talk and tell stories. If using Kirk and associated characters is a violation of the tradmark agreements, how is something as public as this dealt with?

When do you guys think we will see the first minis? Will the be resin or Metal? (hopefully Resin or plastic kits!)

Right now what has been put out in the Miniature Seminar at Origins is the new miniatures will be mostly resin with maybe a few metal pieces if it absolutely has to be done. And Mongoose is shooting for a December Release.

If, and I say IF... they follow Fed Com or another product. The initial release will be as you said: Federation, Klingon, Romulan, as well as, Kzinti, Gorn with a smattering of Tholians and Orions. In Fed Com Tholians and Orions both had their own follow up products to round them out and added the Seltorians. After those 2 the next Follow up was Distant Kingdoms that covered Lyrans/LDR, Hydrans and WYN . The most recent release covered Vudar, ISC, and Andromedans. There also was a Add on in Fed Com that covered Battleships and Dreadnaught Variants that came out before Distant kingdoms if I remember right. The newest add on just released at Origins covered Tugs and Transports.

As you can see there is a lot of material here that ACTA:SF can cover as well as Carriers that they can add in if they choose.

The breakdown is there are 14 Empires in the SFU and most even if they historically never built a class of ships there are details of what it would look like available. So there really is not a reason to refer to them as Major or Minor Races.
