A New Edition of Traveller

I expect you all are feeling as excited as we are.

Indeed - having already played the new game, I know how good it is :)

(seriously, it is a joy to referee).

Played it as well. You should be able to use pretty much all of your previous Traveller material with it. The new rules seem to be mostly streamlining, common sense and a bit of player empowerment. Psionics are easier now, and Awareness is not the game-breaker it used to be (but is still awesome).

Okay, sit rep.

Literally the last graphical tweaks are being done right now, and we are prepping the Core book to be PDF'd. As soon as that is done, we will be uploading it.

Meanwhile, the graphics team has moved on from snails and is now arguing about citizenship tests. Sandrine (French person) is planning to get married to become British, but is not sure about pledging her loyalty to the Queen. Will, on the other hand, has taken citizenship tests from around the world, for fun, and only failed with Zimbabwe.

As conversations go, pretty normal for the Mongoose office...

Just curious, in the Planet Mongoose it gave isometric deck plans as an example of the new art direction, does this mean the old flay grid style is not going to be used in the official materials?

Yes, but you will find 2D b/w versions with every PDF.

And I'll join you, trading my Long Island for NZ. We can be neighbors and play Traveller all the time. :D

What? You haven't been enjoying the 80% humidity this week?

Seriously, everything in the preview post says good things about this new ed. Looking forward to checking it out.

Only ones enjoying this weeks weather are the accountants at PSE&G.

I see that you are in Queens, ever venture into Nassau to play games?

Thanks for letting me know. :-)

I must admit I am addicted to the old flat 2d Deck Plans. I just love them. LOL

Oh and I just bought the Playtest on RPGNow. Can't wait to get home and begin reading!!!!

You wouldn't say that if you knew what the NZ dollar is worth - even our puny Australian dollar is worth more at the moment. Roleplaying books are *expensive* down under - between the exchange rate and the shipping costs it can be brutal. Having Traveller in full-colour hardcovers is fantastic, but I shudder to think of the cost. I was hoping we'd get them in the digest size pioneered by Legend as that has proven to be incredibly convenient, but I suppose that's not happening after all.

There's also the PDF option (not always the preferred of course).

I have a grandmother that was from New Zealand.

Home from the office, packing the bags... getting ready to leave Dallas Texas and drive north about 6 hours. I really, really, really, really hope that there's something I can download from DriveThru before I head out.
30 minutes and counting til I leave...

Matt- can you change the description in the DriveThru sites Beta Playtest decription to say that the $20 voucher only applies to the rulebook PDF and not any POD or other hardcopy?

I thought that it did (it just says rulebook and doesnt specify PDF) , so I'm asking for a refund from DriveThru.

Thx

Steve

Same here.

DTRPG says 'A $20 voucher to be redeemed against the final Core Rulebook, meaning the Beta Core Rulebook will end up not costing you a penny!' - no mention that this only applies to the fianl PDF and not the hardcopy book that I'll actually want!

Not impressed.

I understand your angst but I'm not surprised that an offer on DTRPG is only good on the final pdf version (likely acquired from DTRPG and not someplace else) and will not be applicable at your local game store, amazon, or wherever you eventually get the hard copy.

I had assumed the voucher would be for a DriveThru POD book, or direct from the Mongoose store.

When I found out that this was for the PDF only via DTRPG I realised how worthless an offer it was.

Mongoose are part of the Bits and Mortar programme in the UK - so I buy a hardcopy Mongoose Traveller book from an actual store (typically Leisure Games in London) and I get the PDF included, no need to seperately buy the PDF via DTRPG.

For anybody, in the UK at least, who plans to buy the v2 hardcopy when available from an actual shop rather than an online discounter the offer is misleading.

It would probably be prudent, for trades description purposes, to rephrase the offer methinks. Presently it is potentially misleading...

Personally I like some of the ideas introduced by the beta, and will likely get the pdf final version- but I think i'll stick generally to the v1 set of books and rules as I'm disinclined to buy further rehashes of a game that plays fine.

If it aint broke, i'm certainly not going to fix it. Tweak it yes, fix it? No.

There will be a big, long post on Planet Mongoose tomorrow about the whole design process and approach of the new Traveller that will cover this, but the short of it is that we have had several of the 3rd party publishers on board for the internal playtesting already, with the intention of putting together a comprehensive Logo Licence for the new Traveller.

Matt, at the time I'm reading this, the Planet Mongoose post is actually already up. May I have permission to reprint it, with pictures, in the October issue of Freelance Traveller?
