A New Edition of ACTA is coming...

I just hope it's not Startrek - what can I say, i don't like it.

And I know, it's just a personal opinion.
What do you like then?

Personally I like B5 and Trek. I've never really been a fan of Star Wars and haven't watched any of the other series - other than Stargate I can't say that Firefly, BSG, Farscape et al have even vaguely attracted my interest.

There's no way either the Borg or 8472 could be included and maintain any claim to accuracy of any sort.

The same could be said to be true of Shadows and Vorlons.

Of course, Borg spheres or scouts would be far more playable than a cube.

well a plot powered voyager takes down borg cubes and thats only an intrepid class (probably raid equivalent) so in theory borg cubes could be added, just at armageddon to ancient equivalent.
would have problems with species 8472 but then as greg pointed out, we had shadows and vorlons added into B5 acta as guaranteed people would want to play 8472.

Don't like the Star Trek TV shows. Do like wargaming in the trek universe but already play SFB, which was designed from the ground up to cover the universe, and does so in great detail.

Do like Farscape, BSG and Firefly as TV shows, but of these only Farscape has real potential as a wargame. arguments against BSG have already been covered. As for Firefly the series had virtually no ship combat in it, and even the movie has only the one battle, spectacular as it was. Not enough to build a game on it.

Tried it, and found that it wasn't that much quicker and lost more than it gained over SFB, but then I'm one of those lunatics who's fought the General war in F&E, now that took some time!

lol, strange it wasnt much quicker. I can usually get 2 games of fed com in a night at our club over a 4 hour period. could never say the same about SFB.
always remember the biggest SFB game we did though, 4 way, around 50 ships per side, god that took forever.

SFB game length and time taken also varied alot with the different fleets being used. any kind of plasma ballet would take loads of turns but would still play relatively quickly while anything involving kzinti (massed drones) or worse Federation with carriers (massed fighters with even more drones) could really suck up the time.

However some fleets definitely lent themselves to a rapid resolution, Hydran fusion fleets, lyrans, federation (without carriers), all tended to resolve themselves pretty quickly.

I agree with many on the Star Wars and BSG issue. The bulk of the canon material just doesn't support more then a couple fleets.

A Next Generation type license could work for a Star Trek minis games, though for races like the Ferengi they may be limited to scenarios or will have a heavily non-canon fleet as I think they only ever showed 2 ships, the Maurader and the shuttle, but maybe I am mistaken. Given their desire for wealth they may work as a mercenary force, available to any fleet for the right price.

Farscape would make for a good Minis games. The Leviathans would be of limited use in combat but could serve another purpose (rescue scenarios for example.)

Stargate probably does have enough fleets to support and is still recent enough (and still ongoing with one series) that it could be very popular.

I haven't seen it mentioned yet, and although the series itself ending up being a disaster, but Andromeda had a pretty good setting with some cool ship designs. However because of the bad rating for the series and it being off the air for several years now, it is probably very unlikely that it would picked up as it may not be profitable.

Robotech there was many different factions and races from macross to the most recent shadow chronicles.

Stargate would be the heat for a space game farscape as well.

star trek old news so is star wars time for something new and not done fifty milion times over.

star wars actually has a lot of fleets especially going by the later books:
correlian, bothan, wookie, mon cal etc etc. a civil war started between alot of the races of the galactic alliance.

Whilst other properties may well seem to be compelling, commercial realities may dictate otherwise. With a new Trek film next year, the franchise is likely to be revitalized, and since the film is set in the Kirk era I wouldn't be at all surprised if it changes canon significantly enough that a new game could come out of it that contains content not in earlier games.

A game set in either the Stargate and Farscape unverses has really missed the boat (IMHO) from a commercial point of view.

People said that about Babylon 5 six years ago. . .

Well Stargate is still ongoing in the form of Stargate:Atlantis. I don't know if Stargate is still maintaining the same level of popularity as when SG-1 was on the air but I wouldn't say they would have completely missed the boat.

Stargate is still going quite strong - just had another TV movie for SG1

Farscape not so good - new comic coming out at present so may have something

and both have more than B5 in terms of "new things"

Atlantis has already been cancelled as an ongoing TV series though the possibility of TV movies still exists but at *best* that puts the IP in "maintenance mode".

There is always the possibility that it won't be a TV/movie license at all.

Traveller has many races, and the currently available models could certainly do with some updating. As nice as they are they haven't dated terribly well.

Hopefully there will be a ship design toolkit included so we can carry on using our B5 fleets without resorting to "counts as."

Yes, hopefully there will be a "conversion" between ACTA2 and ACTA3 (or whatever it is called). Since the new game is going to have a points system, it hopefully shouldn't be too hard to do.

Dave
