A New Edition of ACTA is coming...

Stargate is still on air around here and still has got many fans.

On the contrary B5 was aired last time 8 years ago and only on a private channel and Star Trek was on air on the early 80's (and after only on private channels).

I was born in 1979 and have never seen ST on TV (even when I was very young).
Star Trek is known here due to the US fans cosplay (bit like Star Wars troopers) but StarWars or Stargate do have much much more potential here.

With SG-1 and Atlantis already cancelled, their future lies in TV movies, and whilst I expect to see an Atlantis one, the future of SG-1 TV movies is probably in doubt because as far as I'm aware it hasn't even entered production yet. I'm assuming that the cast are still under option for a 3rd movie, but as time drags on those will inevitably drop off and the cast will sign on to new projects.

In order for a successful miniatures games, it needs an expanding fanbase who play miniatures games - that is the commercial reality, so I'd be quite surprised to see anyone taking the plunge into a miniatures game for this IP at present.

Dave

the stargate franchise is still going strong for TV...

since this show will be based on a ship (a la trek) its likely space combat will become even more regular...

In First Contact a taskforce of 20-30 ships just about defeated a Borg Cube through raw firepower. I'd say that's far from being silly. 8472 ships are even more powerful as you say but for a Borg vs. 8472 encounter, that may just about be possible...

Either way - they wouldn't be intended as common fleets, more scenario specific stuff.

They beat the Cube only because Picard was present with his inside knowledge. It was made clear on screen prior to the Enterprise joining the fight that the Starfleet taskforce was screwed...

Anyone who has enjoyed ST: Armada 1 and 2, as I have, knows there is plenty of scope for proper battles in the ST universe.

Now it is my hope that the new ACTA will have enough tools to allow the building blocks for pretty much any genre - we all have our favs. I guess how adaptable will depend on if and what the "Licence" is.

Then again we don't have a magic formula to make B5 ACTA ships and that has not stopped us...... :)

This could be quite exciting, it has points system. Might mean we will able port the stats across from our fleet book's.

If it has a conversion formula for all the weapon types, hull points, etc. then I think it could be worthwhile as it would still allow everyone to continue playing in the B5 universe as well as develop their own ship types if desired.

This would be nice, it would also give everyone a true comparison to how the ships really stacked up against each other. However my concern is that the conversion will be a simple one like Patrol = 100 pts, Skirmish = 200 pts, raid = 400 pts, Battle = 800 pts War = 1600 and Armageddon = 3200 or something like that since the ships are all suppose to be 'balanced' already so any variance in numbers would be unnecessary.

If this is supposed to be a more open system, that includes points, there will be significant room for ACTA development in a user community. True points systems will allow for "tweener" ships, such as the 2nd Edition original Demos, the G'Quonth, the unaltered Vree, the Assault Hyperion, the Balvarin and Balvarix, the Kamare Sas, and others.

The problem, of course, is that it can't be an official Mongoose product for sale. That means while we can take our lead from the ACTA product, the Mongoose can't be involved in stamping the product for general consumption or publication.

I'm wondering if an organized User Community can do that or not, and, if so, if those discussions can happen here or not, and, if you so, how we would continue to propagate that information to the ACTA general public as a free download product, if legal, and if so done, would the community continue to exist, and if....

Suffice it to say that I have many questions. Few answers, too --- odd, since I am such an irritating know-it-all-type. For some of the questions, I don't even know where to start.

lol you got them all worked out already then burger?

points system would be useful for variants as if you add a weapon or even just AD you can add points onto the base ship to pay for these extras etc so this will also make life easier for the new CTA.
Speaking to matt about it theres some interesting stuff coming up and interesting ideas on doing things, sounds like its going to be a good project :D and although I dont know what license yet I know a few its not :D

Given the popularity of OOP games like Man O' War, I have no doubt that an organized player base could produce and support something unofficial as long as no fees were charged for the product.

Picard did help finish off the cube but if you listen the cube was in bad shape by then. It was still doing a lot of damage but it had systems offline.

I hope the new version has a to hit roll & then an armour like VaS. I'd go even further with only having a small crew score which is only damaged by crits.

teaser images of spacecraft were seen on planet mongoose a while ago (maybe a year?) I suspect this is what's being referred to - ACTA rules, new ships, new background fluff, new universe, etc.
