A an unimportant Vargr Musing

LOL - but that brings up another question of differences.

What types of holidays would Vargr celebrate? I can see the usual ones, things based on Great Leaders and Great Events, but I'm not sure they'd have the same type of seasonal based ones that humans do, like Harvest Festivals, because they're primarly carnivores. Or would they?

I believe dogs still eat some vegetables. I've heard that cats (all of them) are the closest there is to a truly carnivorous land mammal.

That said, even livestock-based agriculture has seasons through the year, at least lower tech ones. Generally, the babies are born in the spring, and most of the slaughter happens in the autumn to thin the herd before winter. I can find out how technology has affected that; I have some friends who have worked in a local meat-packing plant.

In my past I worked in a Childrens' Wear section of a large, national chain of department stores...

I can attest that a lot of (high-end) research has been done that shows pretty conclusively that Humans are also seasonal breeders (not all by any means, but most do).

I didn't doubt they'd have seaonal based holidays, but that those seasons and reasons could be much different than ours. Say instead of a "Harvest Festival" celebrating the harvesting of the crops, it would be a "Slaughter Festival", celebrating the thinning of the herds. So let me elaborate.

Even here on Earth, humans have a lot of variance in regional holidays - every country, state/territory, etc has their own little celebrations. But there are some underlying themes that are often found here even among cultures who's celebrations are vastly different from each other - celbration of a birth, celebration/mourning of a death, celebration of the harvest time, observance of the soltices, equinoxes and eclipses, etc.

Some of those themes, like birth & death are going to be common for both Vargr and Humans alike, though the observances may vary widely. Others, like the soltice/equinox/eclipse, are obviously going to vary from world to world, even when the worlds in question have the same race(s) populating them. But other themes, like the aforementioned harvest time may be much different.

The only one that comes to mind for me right now is harvest time. But then I'm not really a dog person, nor a cultural anthropologist, nor even someone with much interest in either. But I am wondering if there are other things that could be different underlying themes to Vargr holidays.

I just had this thought - if the Vargr have always known they were uplifted, perhaps they would have some sort of "uplift day" holiday theme.

Well, if Vargr females still come into heat only twice a year like regular dogs, then that creates a whole other series of issues.

Males and females are equal, until a female comes in heat, then all bets are off for a week or so.

If there are several females, will their cycles align like human females that are in relative isolation? Probably.

So Mating Season could be a Vargr holiday that occurs approximately twice a year (Earth years, not Lair years) and is some kind of Mardi Gras/Orgy mixture.

I'm sure they would. Dogs love fruit and vegetables. Mine does anyway (Black Lab). Especially apples! It's a ball you get to eat!! lol. She will fling an apple, then chase it. After doing that for a while she will sit down and feast on it. She gets so excited when I grab an apple and call her out. It's interesting to watch her try to eat cloves of garlic though. It's a bit too much, but she can't stay away. Take a nibble, drop it. Take a nibble, drop it. Repeat until gone. Seriously though, my dog loves both fruits and veggies. I could see her celebrating harvest time more than she already does.
