1st Ed Early Human 4 points raid.

Mongoose
Ok I finally got my figs, 1st Era and 3rd Era boxes. SO ALOT of ships but I can't use the Omegas or Warlock.

4 points raid I'm looking at:

1xAvenger
1xHyperion
1xSagittarius 2xHermes
2xOlympus Corvettes

I like the Hyperion, the Avenger gives me the fighters and +1 on the initiative. Sagittarius, Flash missiles front and Heavy missiles side, can't decide on Anti-fighter or heavy on the rear (for my plans I think Heavy)- Will move in with the Corvettes to rake a nice broadside. The Hermes sit back on All Stop with Flash missiles. The Hyperion moves with the Corvettes and moves last to line up is Bow sighted gun (did 28 damage to a Bin'Tak Dreddy last night).

Idea being:
Turn 1 most of the fighters come out. only 4 fighters will remain in the Avenger and with carrier 4 they all come out turn 1 (right?!).

Olympi and Hyperion move up, AS DOES the Sagitarius. Moves into range, now I deploy the sag on the flank and move it inwards (so straight 4, angle another 2 or something like that). So in T1 its able to fire front. Turn 2 The ships should be close to 12" or near. So I move forward and complete the turn ending 90degs. Ready to broadside someone with SUperAP Triple Damage, Precise missiles. if not in range then they're likely to be in range turn 3. so I can't all stop and if still alive All Stop pivot next turn and fire the missiles on the other side!!!

Hermes sit back and flash torpedo any enemy stay-at-homers (hoping their size will mean people will view them as pests at best and not fire at them).

Models I've till got (not counting the above 7):

2xNovas
3xHyperions
2xSagittarius
1xArtemis
2xOrestes
2xTetheys
1xOracle
5xfighters (4 are t-Bolts but I can only use Starfuries and the guys i play with won't mind).

I'll be going 2nd ed when it makes its appearance in Australia.

Ideas problems? I tried 2 Novas in an 8 point raid last night. One got Hammered and suffered 30extra damage thanks to the Bin'Tak. The other got two rounds of firing off. I tried the lasers 1/2 AD Bean and AP. Was very unimpressed. I'll try it again MAYBE and see how it goes but I think an Avenger and a Hyperion is hte better choice.

The Avenger is allowed to have 1 fighter deployed at the start. Then when your turn to move arrives, you can launch 4 fighters or 5 if u roll for scramble.
I'm not suprised the Nova got its ass kicked by a Bin'Tak. You shouldn't dimiss this ship yet.
Its excels in 5PT Raid games but suffers against higher priority enemy ships.
If your playing higher priority games, choose an Orestes, i know its slow but its your only battle alternative.
I'm not a big fan of the Hyperion, because the enemy always makes it the first target and it dies quickly. :)

Well 1 got hammered the other was with an Orestes and took on a G'Quan and Ka'Toc...the Orestes did some healthy damage but the Nova wasn't impressive. I think its because I went with the AP/Beam. 12AD Twinlinked would have worked better on the Ka'Toc but the with teh G'Quan 6Hull (off memory) the AP bonus of the lasers is too tempting.

My 8 point Raid list was too Missile heavy:

2xNova's
2xHyperions (after the nova died they made an attack run on the Bin'Tak one was slaughtered the other did a healthy dose of damage, if I had the other or some heavy missiles I could have done some REAL damage).
1xOrestes
3xSagittarius
2xHermes

Against

1xBin'Tak
1xG'Quan
1xKa'Toc
2xPatrolly things
1xMissile torpedo gun boaty thing. (helpful?!)

I just like the Hyperions main gun. It seems most people underestimate (from what I've seen so far) and then they line up with an 4AD Bean, Super AP, Double Damage gun...2 or 3 can really hurt something.

5 point raid, would you recommend dropping the Avenger and picking up 2 Nova's. My fighters don't change but I do pick up two fighhters. Or I could just get another Hyperion...

I'd go with the 2 Nova but the Avenger is still a worthy option. All depends on your mood :)
Charge those Nova forward and use its multi firing arcs to the hit the enemy line :)

see I can IMAGINE a Nova or three just driving through the centre of a fleet guns blazing on all angles. But as to the Reality...

Right bugga that the Avenger can't help me in a battle while two Nova's can.

SO 5 points raid, same as above but take out the avenger and add two novas.

Hopefully your opponent will concentrate his attentions on your long range missle ships (Sagi,Olympus,Hermes) while your Nova's advance with speed.
If the enemy focusses on the Nova this will give your long range ships more time/turns to keep firing those missles. :)

were you playing 1E or 2E?

ATM 1E as thats all I've got but we're building up a mail order (WAY to expensive in aussie- more so now the dollars crashed from 87c/US$ to 75c/US$ in a 4 days...

When the orders built probably get the 2e rule book and the 3rd phase humans. Gives me enough ships to play 1st Phase and 3rd Phase humans very well.

Get the fleet book as well

Down in sydney myself right now from chicago and yeah what a whack the exchange rate just took.

But, on the Nova... I've never seen this ship do anything impressive. We have all tried desperately to get it to work, but it just won't come around. Too slow to 'push into the center' or you enemy is too smart to give you one.

The switch weapon was always almost the same statistcally (hull almost irrelevant), unless you had a scout redirect it for you. Then then the beam is scary.

Hyperions are very underestimated. Not sure why really, though under SFoS they are a bit thin. We do find just one is not very effective, but two or more is death.

Second ed will change the Nova a bit depending on era. Give it another look for early...but its still too slow if your opponent is playing his activations right.

Ripple,

Don't suppose you have your fleet with you now? If not and you're still here on Thursday theres a place called Tin Soldier in the city on York Street. PM me if you want full directions. But Bab5, confrontation, hordes, fow, heroclix (we call them players the clix dicks). All happening from aaround 4:30-5pm until 8:30.

More then enough Bab 5 for more players and wouldn't mind chattin with you bout strats.

I finally painted my models today...well not all of them.

2xNovas
1xHyperion
1xSagittarius
2xOlympus
2xHermes
11xStarfury wings

I'm a bit ify on them. I've painted them red (they look OKish) but idea is that they're Russian Consortium. Now I'm stuck, do I complete the fleet in the Red which I'm not totally happy with or do I use the standard fleet colours and then have some weird Red contingent (and most of my fighters are red now as well)...ARGH.
