I can't add any more to the already excellent list of source material. I'm of the camp that thinks of Traveller as a background setting and not a rule set. Take any ruleset of your choice and using a predominance of projectile weapons...
I've always thought of early Classic Traveller as being more "17th century Navies in Space." :) Later that feel evaporates fairly rapidly with the inclusion of Naval ships the size of the Plankwell.
The inclusion of the Purple Heart as a wound award was a big give away that the game had...

I'd not be keen on the Shadowrun system. I've always seen Traveller skills as being that much wider than individual types of equipment even as a tight specialisation.
I'm another 'it's not broken' voice here. If you make stats much lest relevant to task rolls you can reach the stage were the question comes along of 'why have stats at all?'
Andrew Whincup explanation that stats are natural aptitude and skills are application of practise feels just about right...
