Still can't quite believe it Elite: Dangerous (or Elite 4 as we all know it) has finally been announced on Kickstarter by David Braben !!! :

This is a day that will long be remembered - it has seen the end of .. sorry getting carried away there.

Been waiting for this announcement for, oh I dont know, ten years or more! I am as excited as I was when I first played Elite Frontier way way back when I was 27 in the 1990s. Please pledge all you can and ensure Braben does this one perfectly!!!

Very exciting times!!!

I know this has absolutely nothing to do with Traveller but for me Elite and Traveller go hand in hand as two of the most important things in my life (along with my family). Hoorray!!

Time to get drunk.

Will be watching this one.

Over the years, we have been in contact with the Elite guys, trying to get a licence for Traveller - unfortunately, they had absolutely no mechanism for licensing (we ended up talking to their sales team!).

Whoah! A Traveller version of Elite would be awesome!

If you can land licenses for Blake's 7 and Elite, I'll be a very happy man.

Original Elite was based on, among other sources, original Traveller. If they can borrow from Traveller without getting a licence, you should be able to borrow back; if not, tell them they can't use Commander Jameson on any version of Elite (guess where that name originally came from).

Not just Commander Jameson, but the original Elite's trade categories were lifted almost word-for-word from Classic Traveller!

After forty years on this world, getting to combat status Elite on the Spectrum version is still the greatest achievement of my life. Took me an entire summer of many hours a day.

I know the feeling. In my case it was Escape Velocity, but there you go.

One minor concern is the multiplayer comment. Not to be antisocial, but I like games which don't need multiplayer; firstly it gives you more flexibility in playing it, secondly it doesn't put you squarely in the gunsights of EVE online....

Agreed, but, as I understood the kickstarter pitch page, they made a point of saying that you can choose what other players will appear in your game to interact with, so that you can play in a universe shared only with your friends. If so, then restricting it further to include only yourself should definitely be possible.
