Women of the Traveller Universe

Maybe. Or one of the PC's receiving the following letter:

Code:
Dear Son,
Please come home asap. The family received a draft notice for you today, and since you weren't around, your grandmother decided to enlist as you. Please come back and help straighten this mess out before the old biddy get's herself killed.
Love,
Mom

If you could just change that Imperial sunburst to a Solomani cruciform, I'd use them to torment my players in my upcoming game. That would really disturb them...

Beech: I'll see your Dot 'n' Pat, and raise you The Chuckle Brothers!

In a way I almost have to admire the artist. He really managed to get
everything
wrong, from the colour of the uniforms down to the size of
a treecat (and the number of her legs, it seems).

Four alternate views of a manga image of women in Traveller.

Reminds me a bit of Elizabeth Moon's setting.

Man what gets me is the Thong on the VaccSuits, What an unfortunate place for a strap. Hope that isn't supposed to be load bearing.

No idea when that art was made but there do seem to be some space suits with "between" straps. Orange seems to be a stock Japanese spacesuit color in fiction* and the design looks familiar, like something from Legend of the Galactic Heroes.

Sorry to put some pictures of guys (and one stuffed suit) in this thread, but that's all I could find on a short notice.

Compensation pictures! http://www.wpafb.af.mil/photos/media_search.asp?q=tron&page=2

Beth Greschner of General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems testing a communication system while wearing a ACES suit, as worn on the space shuttle. It's orange, has an ahem! strap, and her hair looks nice. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Crew_Escape_Suit

In retrospect Luke's outfit looks so very much a cheap prop. What is it with the pens sticking out of his arm pocket, the strange thing at the top of his right boot- what is that for?, (and the shiny leather boots, how un-astro-pilot are they?), the mini corrugated bib and the cooking gloves.
The helmet was the only cool thing.
And don't get me started on the seat belt between the legs look. ;)

You probably don't want to take a close look at the original Ep IV movie stills of Darth Vader then. That's a costume that really loses a lot when it isn't in motion on screen.

The Rebel Pilot suit works when you consider how sub-rosa most SW tech really is. Goofy looking in a still? Sure. Part and parcel of a setting so comfortable with technology that they let 8-year olds play with free-floating jet engines? Oh yeah.

I think Seeley who does the art for Elizabeth Moon Vatta series really has an eye for what Traveller is all about. His portrayal of Ky in the various stages of the development of her character speaks wonders on how art for women should be.

I am not calling for abandonment of the Golden Era/Age look of Traveller but rather to get it inline with the developments out there (think how we almost all liked the improvements made to the Starship drawings in Mongoose). Looking through Colin's thread of inspirational art makes me think that Traveller will have to change from some of the Keith work into something of a different that Mongoose which is now taking us upon.

We have the male characters reflecting this change but not the female...and Klaus...you are just plain...right on...these are realistic for Traveller for the age when Traveller players retire...but what can I say...maybe some more comely...next time...

Think WW2 carrier pilot. The loopy leg things are IIRC part of the harness for a "seat" mounted parachute; the boot things are rescue flares. The bib is the may west (or possibly heating pad for B-29 crew ?)

According to the Star wars Canon, those penny things are wifi thumb drives.

The shiny boots ? Fresh out of the quartermonsters stores; or he has a martinet for a CO.

Gloves ? They look cool. This is a fighter pilot we are describing.

The helmet ? 1950's F-86 style; may even have been built off of real military hardware. Even notice all the Stens the troopers have ? or the german LMG ?

But yes. It is a stage prop, not a recreation. Most stage film stuff is designed to look good for the movie camera, and the shots used , not direct observation.

Still, Boba Fetts armor suit still looks too junky. But, cool Helmet.

I haven't read every reply yet, so my post will reflect that.

Anyway, forgive me if someone else has posted this, but Women in Traveller? Sure, some will dress like bimbos, but some men will dress like "Himbos" too. Just like in real life.

Or to put it another way, take a look at the cover of DGP's "Vilani and Vargr" (I'll link a picture of it if you've never seen it). It just depicts a Vilani woman in a jumpsuit/uniform from her Free Trader. The Vargr on the cover is dressed in a similar jumpsuit (obviously tailored for a Vargr) since he's also a crew member of the same ship.

Probably a better one out there, but that cover image is good enough.

Now, not saying that every woman (or Vargr) will be dressed in an orange jumpsuit. Just saying that they will be dressed in clothing that fits the situation. Anyway, I actually find that cover a decent depiction of a woman in Traveller.

Stirling SMGs, but close :)

Sterling, actually, to be excruciatingly pedantic. ;)

That sirs, is most excellent pedantry. I guess those are Stirlings - no magazine, though, right ?.

And if I may play, I believe the heavy blasters used by the stormtroopers on tatooine are MG42's.

We all know about Han and Leah's guns, right ?

To further the pedantry, you mean "Han and Leia's guns".
