Wing Commander

Mongoose
Anyone ever play that game way back in the day? Well not -waaay- back in the day, but you know what I mean.

I've been thinking about working on a monumental project (mainly because I'm deployed and I am bored) focusing around the Wing Commander theme. I found Traveller (I played it several years ago very briefly. Fun) and decided what the heck, I might model it using Mongoose's Traveller game.

I don't really know if there is a point to this posting, just really seeing if there are other people out there who fell in love with the Wing Commander games and books that were released and maybe see if anyone would find it feasible or not to try and make a game using the awesome (extremely awesome) Traveller system.

Oh... And hi all! I'm new!

Welcome aboard!

Played the computer game (back in the day ;) )... it should make a good fit as a Mongoose setting.

Most welcome to the forum, fizz. :D

The only small problem I would see with a Wing Commander style game
(if I remember Wing Commander right ...) is that Mongoose Traveller does
not have any detailed rules for starfighter dogfights, so you might have to
add some houserules for this.

I loved playing the Wing Commander games. Though as time went on, things actually to seem to get worse... And go forbid they made that movie....

Ow...Dad Booooot in Space!!!

I'm still brushing up on several of the books I've just picked up, but from what I've seen in the basic Traveller book and Highguard, starfighter dogfights wouldn't be too hard to emulate. Maybe a few rules tweaks. It was really just a passing idea as I tried thinking of all the cool things one could do with this system.

Of course, the Traveller setting itself is already turning out to be epic in my eyes. I can't believe I had forgotten about this game until I chanced upon it on Drivethrurpg.com the other day.

Also, thanks for the warm welcome everyone, I'm glad to see this community respond so quickly and friendly toward newcomers.[/quote]

And of course Privateer fits neatly into the free trader rules, since its speculative trade is a clone of Elite, which is itself a clone of Traveller's.

Ah yes, the Privateer angle. I didn't think about that. I was sitting here picking through the info and wondering exactly which particular setting within Wing Commander I'd be interested in doing. Heck, I think there is a Free Trader Transport in Wing Commander/Privateer in fact.

Also, other than Privateer, I think the last Wing Commander I ever played was 4? The one where you take on Tolwyn and his Black Lance operatives. Some may not have liked that as much, but I sure enjoyed

I am a big WC and Privateer fan & thoroughly recommend visiting:

Loads of nostalgic goodies, downloads, game mods & WC links there.

I thought Privateer was very Travellerish back then. I shall look into it again, thanks Mr. Redington. 8)

Yep, I am a frequenter of that website. Been that way since 1999-2000 (maybe earlier). There was once a text based game that popped up and was advertised on that website: Wing Commander: Red Horizon. Played it for several years (even before it was put up on wcnews). Big Space Opera style game. Had hundreds of players involved in that game (often roughly 100 or so people online at once). Pilots, Marines, Mercenaries, Black Ops, Traders, Corporations, Senators, Royalty (one group started their own nation: The TGE, originally a trading and mercenary org)... You name it, there were probably players playing it. There was political backstabbing (and not just between the UBW and the Terran Confederation) of all sorts. It was one epic of a game. And it was utter Chaos.

Sometimes I miss that game. It is what really got me involved in the roleplaying community. I had made a lot of friends (and met several of them too!) during that game. Anyhow, enough of that. Yes, www.wcnews.com has a vast wealth of knowledge concerning the Wing Commander universe.

Have any of you played the SNES version of it? Is it good?

I ask because a local used video game store has (or at least had) a copy; if they still have it next month I'm going to get it.

I have both the SNES WC games, they are fun, but lack fine control due to the pad vs keyboard interface.

WC was the first PC game I ever played when I was about 3. I loved it and have been hooked on space fighter combat ever since.

I remember buying a version of WC (first? - several CDs...) for PC just to show off the power of a new build 'hooked up' to a Dolby Surround Sound circa early '90's. :D

'Course, back then such systems still cost a good fraction of $10k U.S.

Probably 3 Heart of the Tiger. 1 and 2 didn't need multiple CD's.

Ah - thanks for that! Would be about the right timeframe. Never been much of a video gamer, but I do remember enjoying this game (especially the background ship noises that throbbed the house on the surround sound hookup :D ).

Interesting Traveller tie-in - Wiki said:
A novelization of the game, by William R. Forstchen and Andrew Keith, was published in 1995.
