IF you think that D&D mechanics fail, Conan is different enough and wins in certain areas and may be what you are looking for. One big problem in d20 (3rd edition or 3.5) is that Hit Points outpace damage potential and it is very unlikely that someone could get killed by a single attack. It's also very easy to hit things at high levels as BA outpaces AC and parry is not up to the task. Conan solves those issues. Conan has low magic, but it is interesting magic and a single spell can be a very important moment in the story. It is also more flexible magic and the spellcasters, scholars at least have much more to offer a party than just their evocations.
I disagree aobut the noble as my group tends to have a good mix of roleplaying and fighting and our nobles always seem ot be very happy with the experience.
Give it a run and see what you think. If you have come here to ask about it, you are already too close to turn back and you will likely love it.
