why can't the new cards look like this?

I was playing around with the stats for SST: EVO and my design software and wondered why the cards can't look like this...

Hmmm...

Keep up the good work Judge...Maybe resize the icons a bit to make the numbers there a little more readable....

I think the numbers are perfectly readable, we just need a key to the symbols to help us learn what they mean, once you have that figured they are fine.

I think the symbols just need to be clearer. I have yet to even play a game of SST and yet I know the blue shiled (6) is the Armour Save, the green targety looking one is Target 3+. The Kill and move could use clearer symbols, as could the CC stat.

Like any card system, you just need to make it intuitive, but it still takes a little time for the players to catch onto the layout.

I'm not sure that Judge Xombe really knew about Hiromoon's efforts, but he does now . Judge Xombe's work is commendable, but I prefer the lower contrast that Hiromoon's provide. It's something that will vary from person to person, but the "simple" approach has a quality of it's own, imho. It's probably why I prefer Olive Drab on my infantry over other painting options.

Competition is healthy though.... or do you appreciate industries having a Trust?

Besides, I'm just offering some advice to the fella, that's all.

Denying that we have egos just makes us liers. It's all good, gentlemen. There is always something to be gained from comparing and contrasting the work from various sources. In the end, the games we play win, Mongoose wins, and we the players win. Just to shove my ego in for a quick nibble, I hope my "artistry" with terrain over the past year or so has been of some use for game table ideas. I think we all have something to contribute to this hobby here. :D

So, you actually like fiddling casually with grenade pins?

The symbols would be clear enough in print. The original post is a low-rez screen shot.

Here's a close up

Nice. I'd definately like to see more of yours. While I think Hiromoon has hit it with the simple cards, I like flash, so I'd be using your cards.

Nice work, and the symbols are definately cleaer.

Nice work, and the symbols are definitely clear.

If somebody puts all the stats (including special powers) in an excel sheet once the EVO game comes out, I'll gladly merge em to PDF cards.

I still think it would be cool to have options like weapon cards with cost and stats, so you can slip them under the basic squad card but still see the point and dice stats. Not sure if that works in the scheme of the rules, though.

Oh, and I like Hiro's cards as well. It was what inspired me. Different is not better or worse, just different. design is subjective. some will like his better.

btw, I changed up the image at the start of the thread in response to a few things.

you can see it here

Watch, it'll come down to who's is easier on ink. ;)

That's so true. I notice that alot in RPG designs...are rpg-ers just more thrift-minded?

But ya, these cards are a kind of dream-design I'd like to see ship with the product versus having folks print them at home.

Heck, I'd be willing to give the design to Mongoose just to see it printed that way.

Oddly, yes and no. RPG players will spend $30 for a 200 page book, even though during the mid 1990's for $30 you could get a much, much thicker book.

Personal costs, though, for printing things like cards (though in all honesty you just need one to show a group of the same unit) are what really get's 'em. That's really the only complaint I've gotten for my cards.

The other thing is I had almost three whole army books worth of cards created before the switch over, and I was looking forward to doing the Forth and Coven too....

Hmmm I think the issue might be who buys the ink for the printer, when all the gaming is done at one place and all the printing is done there..... then it can cause friction, but when you have other people with printers and laminators 8) then its less of an issue.

Like the changes you have made in making the Movement a bit clearer, love the tick boxes to add extra troops and longbow/ pee wee. Not so sure about the hashing you have put behind the morita stat, but hey its not a biggie.
