White Hyperions

Why do people paint their Hyperions white? They weren't white in the seies at all. They were just grey like Omegas, with blue stripes. So I'm just wondering why people paint them white??

It was based on AoG's photos I guess. No idea as to why AoG did them in white, though.

Anyway I don't really care. Painted mine grey...

Silly posts aside I painted mine grey as well. They wouldn't have fit in at all with the rest of my fleet otherwise. The artimis is another ship that shows up white in some pictures, I always figured it to be an early EA colourscheme that they gave up on when someone figured out how long it would take to paint a nova or omega. Or was abandoned for economic reasons.

Which ship entered service first? :? The Nova, Hyperion or Olympus? They were all present in The Beginning yet bore distinctively different color schemes. Actually it's the Nova and Olympus against the Hyperion.

I always thought that ships painted grey were built by Rocketdyne and the grey/blue were Karmatech's. But since that idea came from b5tech.com and some sites of noncanon ships, I guess its a rationalization at best.

The real reason for different schemes in EA was probably more production-related than anything. The Hyperion was the 1st large EA warship in the series. As someone once pointed out, producers weren't very happy with the design, but it prove difficult and inconvenient to completely remove.

The Hyperions were white in the show, they just appeared duller with the shadowing you see in space.

The Olympus, Nova and Omega are all genuinely grey in paint scheme.

Also, on a personal note, my entire Early Years fleet is white, Third Age fleet grey, Crusade fleet dark grey and Psi Corps fleet black.

Do you have any screenshots/vid captures/JMS quotes to support this? All the pics I can find are definitely grey (albeit a bit lighter grey than Omegas), even taking space shadows into account.

I wouldnt say white but Hyperions do look to be certainly a much LIGHTER grey than Novas/Omegas when theyre shown on screen (particularly in 'in the beginning').

As far as I can recall anyway the AoG ones used to be light grey anyway, it was only the Mongoose ones that are actually white.

EDIT: ok have gone and looked at the AoG page and they do look pretty bloody white to me but it COULD be really light grey, personally I paint all my ea a mixture of grey and dark steel/silver colours (with bits of blue and red stripes on the engines) and then wash them with black ink to give them a dark look (I just think they look cooler that way)

Having just flicked through In the Beginning and Severed Dreams I'd say it all depends on the lighting. In ItB they look whiter but in SD they look like a very light grey with a few white emplacements.

Given this, I'd say anyone can be correct in their colours :)

Well in the grand scheme of things its your own fleet, you dont have to stick to the official colour schem, just go with what you think looks cool. You could have a bright pink EA fleet with Neon Yellow stripes and turquoise highlights if you really wanted (see Burgers blinged out whitestar for a prime example of how to butcher a loveley miniature :P).

One person ages back had the awesome idea of doing all there era EA fleets, doing early years white/very light grey, Third age mid grey and crusdae very dark grey/black showing the EA fleet getting progressively darker as time goes on and Earth Force loses its innocence. If I could be bothered to do 3 full seperate fleets for my EA I'd definitely copy said idea. But I'm WAY too lazy ;)

@ Locutus: You mean him?
LOL, IIRC there was someone else actually but I've just run with the same idea :)

It also helps keep ships from each fleet separate and I can of course still "borrow" ships if I need to.

The 'white' Hyperions come from a couple of scenes in the show which depict Delenn in the contol chamber on the Minbari flagship just before the death of Dukhat.

The approaching EA fleet, led by Prometheus, is shown projected on the Minbari's holographic (or whatever) display; this has the effect of 'washing out' the image, making a grey ship appear white.

Possibly as a result of this, Terry Miesle at The Starship Modeller Painted his model white back in '98, and the idea stuck.

Images of Hyperions from those and other episodes (Voice in the Wilderness, Severed Dreams) and In The Beginning show the ships as grey.

Upto now, I've painted all my EA ships mid-grey; I'm going to paint my last batch of Hyperions, when (if...) they arrive, in Russian Naval Aviation three-tone blue disruptive for a change.

Hey, it's science *fiction*. Paint them whatever colour you like.

Cool, thanks for the info Nomad :)
I think I'll do mine grey... maybe with some psychodelic red/blue/yellow patches

If you look at the most recent films (and the title sequence for Lost Tales) it looks like Hyperions and Omegas are actually meant to be bare steel (or whatever they build them with). The grey colour is probably down to early CGI limitations, although Hyperions do usually look a lighter shade. Same for Drazi ships and such. I tend to use GW Fortress Grey for Hyperions and Codex Grey drybrushed over black for Omegas. Likely repaint my Drazi that way too if I'm stuck for something to paint some wet Sunday :)

Indeed, this corresponds with my viewings of ItB being white (produced mid-season 4) and before this point them being light grey.

Probably another effect to remember is that colours look lighter than they really are when you put them against a dark background, and you don't get much darker than space. Combine that with the mind tending to not see a lot of the details when you're not looking for them and then just filling in the blanks when needed, and you've got a great setup for people to think back and think that the Hyperions were white.
