White Hyperions

In SD there is a shot of the combined EA fleet heading for B5. I think we see an Omega and Hyperion onscreen in the same shot. Whilst the Hyperions are not snow white, they certainly look a lot lighter than the Omegas. I cannot find the shot I am thinking of at the moment but here are a couple of comparison shots.

Not white but a lighter shade of pale. ;)

Great pics :)

Those two actually look pretty similar in colour to me. The sun is shining on the Hyperion, making it appear lighter. Maybe it is a bit lighter, but certainly isn't white.

This is sort of related to the thread, and I'm not making one of my silly jokes, I'm actually curious. Would paint dry in vaccum?

Maybe the parts are actually painted before assembly. I remember the hull of b5 was already blue even when it was under construction.

The obvious question of course, is why would you want to paint a space ship? Extra cost, weight (!), hassle, manpower... all for aesthetics?

Not just for aesthetics, the paint could help mask the radar signature, or even the heat signature. Also, if the paint is very reflective it could slightly mitigate damage from laser weapons.

Who knows how an alien race would think. There could be people out there who highly value a beautiful paintjob on their spaceships. There could also be religious reasons involved as well, not just aesthetic reasons. As much as I don't want to use it as referance, in LOTR the minbo character bags the ugly hunam ships.

Plus, certain vehicles of a certain colour go faster.

Forinstance, modern Kawasaki motorcycles go faster when painted green, but sufficently old ones go faster in black.

Ferraris go faster in red, maybe Hyperions go faster in white?

I don't think it's the white on the Hyperions, I think it's the go faster (blue) stripes on them!
