I've just thought actually.

===> If we want to support the hobby in our local area we should buy from our FLGS

===> If we want to paint and assemble our own SST miniatures we have to special order from Mongoose

:? :? :? :?
does that mean for the good independant stockists we've got to get used to prepainted pre-assembled miniatures....
After Matt's last post (about if them not selling them not bothering) and this troubling thought I think I'd best get used to prepainted if I wanna play SST...

Why, stripping them/overpainting them is only going to take as much time as assembling them etc

I plan to paint some, especially character models.

But its nowhere near as fun is it?
Painting over something thats already painted is pretty pointless sadly (especially if it is a decent paint job to begin with) and most stripping process' take a long time which is only gonna increase the time before I can paint them which means in all liklyhood I'll never get round to painting them (Being realistic I gotta lot of stuff up in the air at the moment... ah who am I kidding I'm lazy).

So it'll probably be easier to just give up the prospect of painting SST altogether...
Which I suppose is good from one point of view since I'll be able to devote time to other things more in need of a lick of paint, but bad in another since I'll have to buy models to game with and models to paint, as opposed to both at the same time.

I'll always end up tatting Lol! Its in my nature.

Actually you are kinda right.

Its not about to EE or not. Theres just too many other wargames out there that are really top.

By MGP themselves there is ACTA. Good rules and if you like B5 a no-brainer.
And i wont even go to other possibilities. it is just that if you are a hobbyist, and not a pure wargamer, it is just easier to go to other games.

Competition is fierce, and i dont wanna see my decision to be based on the fact, well it is prepainted or not.

You don't loose detail when you repaint if you do it right.

If you're loosing detail, then you're either:

a) Not using a thin enough consistency primer.

or

b) Schlocking your mini with WAY to much primer (which I see a lot of people guilty of!)

The primer is just there to help the paint stick, not to form a hard candy shell people! That means - especially on a plastic model, that the thinnest of thin coats will do! It is perfectly ok to still see some of the undercolor show through in recessed areas since those areas will not be experiencing a lot of wear and tear. If you need those areas to be black or whatnot, you can just touch them up with a fine brush later.

Really, you can actually put a decent coat of primer on a mini if you're using the right sort of primer, but if you're using $2.99 a can stuff from wal-mart, the problem isn't the mini, the problem isn't the prepaint. The problem is using the wrong tool!

Ah, the infinite wisdom of Zathras...

"You are finite, Zathras is finite. This... this is wrong tool."

I didn't read this whole thread, sorry. But, I do remember reading in the BIG thread Matt saying that they were definitly trying to make unpainted minis available for special order for those who like to paint. I'll take the pre-paint, but it would be nice to see both sides covered, or, make it possible to paint a few of my own for variations.

As I've said before, I don't think you can injection mold colored parts, at least not at the detail you're seeing. You can use a 3-D printer to get that sort of detail, in which case the price is virtually the same colored or uncolored, the difference is just in the plastic powder used to make different parts of the model. Which would also explain why these new models will be fully assembled - what's the point of a sprue or multiple parts when the whole product is being built from the ground up with no waste of materials and no worries about overhang like you have with molds?

As for CNC millers - they're for cutting and removing material. Not useful for mini's when you're not making a mold. Put them out of your mind!
