Which fleet to get? Vorlons, Psycorps, Centari or Shadows?

Hi there.

Recently some of the crowd at the local games store have been getting in to Babylon 5 ACTA, and being a big BAB 5 fan I guess I soon will to. However I can't decide which fleet to get, and so I've joined this forum looking for some advice/information.

My criteria for selecting a fleet is threefold.

1. I'm trying to pick a fleet that's no over represented at the local games store.
2. Must mostly be made up from ships seen on the show.
3. The core ships should all be available in a fleet box, I don't want to buy heaps of extra ships to make my fleet work.

So based on the first of my criteria I'm looking at Vorlons and the Psycorp fleet.

How do these 2 fleets play in ACTA and ACTA 2? What are thier strength and Weaknesses? Are the ships that come in the box sets enough to make a decent force?

To a lesser extent I'm also considering Shadows or Centari (though we are rumoured to have players for these fleets), how do those two rate?

Vorlons - probably easiest to start with - only one gun each ship unless heavy Cruiser, reasonable speed and good manuevability plus staying power. Guns are powerful and long range. Excellent fighters with both a beam and its own Anti-fighter. Very small choice of ships. No Scout. All ships in show I think

Shadows - potentially very powerful ships when used right but much more complicated - good weapons but lots of special rules - both good and bad. Terrible fighters - expensive and fodder for other fighters / antifghter batteries. Again very small choice of ships - but all good. All (both) ships in Show

Centauri - Ah my good dear friend - the Lion of the Galaxy - a massive choice of ships for all tastes - mostly equiped with very powerful short-medium range guns. Lots of possible choices as to how to play at all levels. In show - Vorchan, Primus, Balvarian, Kutai, Sentris

Psi Corps - hmm not played and a bit of a dark horse at present - lots of special rules and things other fleets have - one of the best fighters in the game, reasonable choice of ships. Most ships are in show

hope is some help

Hey Zed...

Thing is we've got two Centauri players already (incl. Drew and do you really want to take on Barry the walking stick?)

Zree I believe Pete was thinking about but he ended up going Pak'Ma'Ra and Brakiri, so they may still be open.

As for Shadows- we've got two of them as well, and you said you didn't like the Drach ships to me a couple weeks back when I demoed the game for you so that rules them out.

I'd say Zorlons then as we don't really have anyone playing them yet. As for the fleet boxes they're designed to be 5 points battle, which is more then enough. We've been playing 3 or 4 points Raid. My painted ships = 5 points raid or 2.5 points battle to give you an idea.

However I think with most box sets it gives you what you need to play but no doubt you'll want to get a few more ships to tool the fleet to your particular style. You could always proxy tho.

Well actually the Shadow box is bit more flexible

as there are only two models in their fleet - Scouts are either Raid or Battle and the Shadow Ships are either War or Armagedon - so various point combinations possible.............

Unless anyone else lays claim to Vorlons at the local club I guess I'll probably end up with them. The Psycorp are the other option but while the're cool, there fleet was never a huge part of the B5 series.

I like Centari to though, but we have 2 players. So If I like the game that would be a good second fleet. or I'll have to convince one of the Centari players to lend me thier fleet.

We don't have a Vree player, but I'm not a big fan of them, to much probing.

pak would be a good choice, ... if we have ever seen a pak ship in the show.
(of course if you say you have seen drazi then you know a bit of pak fleet etc ...)

Otherwise you've seen all Vorlons ships and most of centauri ones.
Do you have a human player, might be a good choice also.

The old minbari box with SharlinS is also good going if you find it.
(I use it :D )

either way, have fun :D

we have actually seen a pak´ma´ra fly a Warbird, which was refered to by Lennier as a "pak´ma´ra military transport". So yes, the Warbird is canon for both Drazi and paks.

Ok might have missed this one ;-)
But everyone knows that pak are payed in hull so it's not
a ship "created" by pak ;-)

(But the pak weaponery is good, I use pak in campaign and their plasma torps hurt a lot :D :D )
