Metal bases for support... mostly because I manage to drop all the models I recently painted... and the plastic stands snap right off while the metal ones need to be bent back a bit.

This sounds like a probelem with the post, not the base. Unless the big plastic circle thingy broke? :D

I think metal stems is what's important.

this is what I'm saying. the plastic stem snaps if you look at it wrong. (I've given mine plenty of ugly looks... 8) )

using brass, I've done a couple things that I can't do with plastic:

1) size the post to the model. Hyperions, if you use the "stock" hole, need a very narrow mount post. Bigger models (Poseidon in my case) need a very sturdy post, so I used a larger brass tube (11/32 if memory serves)

2) vary model height. my brick storage system allws me to overlap models in the foam brick if i need to, if I can vary the height enough.

3) make removable bases. My space marine landing craft has a detachable flight stand and a separate textured base for when its "offloading troops" and landed on the ground.

Games Workshop Flying Bases... you need make the hole a little bigger, but the bases are made of a stronger plastic, and have a larger base so you don't have to worry about Your Shadow-Omega Tipping over and losing its Arms (is that what they're called?)

Plastic for me due to availability and cost.

However, I replace the stems with brass hexagon tubing and place a fitting stem into the ship. That way they're strong and the ships can be taken off the bases when I pack them away. Also allows me to adjust the heights of the ships for balance and appearance.

I suppose metal would work just as well if not better... :?

I do something similar with square tubing.

Thanks for all the great input guys! This has been really helpful. I have enjoyed playing this game in the past and own some minis, but it seems like the bases are always breaking on me. Hopefully with some of these ideas I will be able to re-base what I have to make them more durable so that I can get out there and play this game.
