What's up with Traveller?

Banded Mongoose
Hello again,

I have been gone for quite a while, but nothing new is happening on the Traveller front, is the game dead now that T5 is comming out? No more alien modules, no more sector-books?

It really seems that the Traveller name is cursed by some ancient God of misfortune. All incarnations of Traveller past CT has died, is Mongoose dying as well?

We were told that there would be a Droyne Book, a K'kree book and that Mongoose would eventually map the entire Imperium.

Please do not take this as criticism, I am just worried as I love what Mongoose did!

Its not dead, just sleeping :)

More seriously, as far as i know, more stuff is due for traveller, trillion credit squadron was released recently, and the books you mentioned are being written.

I believe some of the writers are just doing it in their spare time and now they are probably busy going through a 600+ page book.

Mongoose Publishing is not Cthulu.
I understand, it's an easy mistake to make, but still...

Yep - also, I think Gareth Hanrahan, who's the Pirates of Drinax and Secrets of the Ancients author, has relatively recently acquired an additional small human, so that may be on a go-slow for a while but that doesn't mean it's stopping.

TCS is a solid book and we're hopefully going to get a mini TCS event some time soon, and Mongoose is still very much asking for submissions. I'm half tempted to float a couple of ideas myself.

I wish Mongoose would update their Release Scheduale with the other planned products. I like all things Traveller, but 2300 seems to dominate that listing at this point and has for a while. So fear not Mongoose Pub is still running strong with the Traveller products, we just need some updates to this page to list the other projects that are also being planned/worked on. Remember all good things come to those that are willing to wait.

Other things are in the works all over the place but most of the writers, as far as I know, are freelancers who do it in their spare time. It slows progress to a crawl, but at least things are ongoing still. And I can confirm that small humans make writing even slower :P

I'm glad someone else thinks TCS is okay. Thanks Locarno ^^

Four-year life span. The same for most RPGs.

I don't think either Marc or Mongoose is interested in MGT ending. If it does, Marc has to find someone else to do all the background stuff. Again. And Mongoose loses a big line.

More is on the way, but some products take longer than others. I can't imagine K'kree being easy to write. Their last coverage (for GURPS) was basically a 30 page smear piece. The Droyne are enigmatic in theory, but rather boring in practice, and the Hivers are, relative to Mongoose's alien format, largely unexplored.

We are currently in the midst of changing how we produce books, so the schedule is a bit 'floaty' at the moment. Give us a month or two, and we will be able to start giving you a proper heads-up!

Well, we have racked up five years, and have agreed a road plan with Marc for the next five (and have even had conversations about projects beyond that). So I find fault with your prediction, Sir :)

As I said, we are having some changes in the way books are done (a reflection on RPGs as a whole, not Traveller itself), but we currently have the following at various stages of progress for Traveller (that is, they are being written right now!);

Supplement XX: Space Stations
Supplement XX: Mecha
Alien Module 6: Droyne
Compendium 3
Armageddon 2089 (a setting book, with several supplements already planned)
Parts 2 and 3 of the Grendelssaga
Chinese Arm Adventures
The World Builder's Handbook (title may change)

We are also in the process of talking about/commissioning;

A new sector book for 3I
Another Minor Alien Module
Book 1: Mercenary Second Edition
New Judge Dredd supplements

And there are longer term projects in the works too...

There was some talk about War in a Box miniatures sets. Is this something that might yet happen?

Yes.

Is the short answer.

The slightly longer one is that we are making some big changes in the way we produce miniatures and, when that is done, a fair bit of focus will be going on Victory at Sea. However, come 2014, well, we will have to see :)

But yes, a Traveller miniatures game is most certainly on the cards. We know it will be 3I rather than 2300AD (though maybe that will come later), and that it may possibly be 6mm or 10mm, making 'grand scale' battles possible. Beyond that... nothing has been decided for certain.

Yes, something that I have been waiting for. :)

I hope it will have the Striker/Fusion & Steel ability too. Does not have to be in the beginning but hopeful it still has it.

All sounds good and I look forward to purchase it all to add to the rest of my Dead Tree Library. I might have a strong point of view on specific topics, but I do support the Traveller game regardless whom publishes the Dead Tree product. I buy them all, but as I have said many times that it is just resource for me and the concepts/ideas might in some form be used via mining for my own games rules or campaigns.

So power on and full speed ahead Mongoose...stell the best company to put out Traveller products so far in it's long history!

How will that affect the content of future books? :)

You da man!

[side note] - Formatting single column for pdf & ebooks would be great. Unlike a paper version, one can't just flick your eyes to the top of page but must scroll.

Just a thought...
