What was your 1st edition of Traveller?

Hey am almost as old as dirt... My 1st edition was the black boxed set in 78 or so. Been hooked ever since.
Same here. I realized the other day while talking to my comic book collector friend I am and have always been a Traveller collector. I started with the LBBs. Then the Traveller Book, the LBBs in the big box, 2300 (because it said Traveller on the box!), Megatraveller, TNE, GURPS Traveller, T4, GTISW, and now MGT. I've been considering T20 and HeroTrav just to fill in the blanks.

My favorite... at this point I think MGT is ranking right up there with CT. That's saying a lot!

One of the first LBB sets to enter the UK, having picked it up at Games Day and started our first campaign sitting on the steps of the Central Hall, many, many years ago!!! :)

My first version was Gurps Traveller. Then I picked up CT, MT, TNE, and finally MGT. I'd say MGT is my favorite to date, though I LOVE the TNE setting.

In 1982 my neighbour got Deluxe Traveller and I picked up Starter Traveller the next year though by that time I'd already picked up Book 4 Mercenary

Since then I've enjoyed all versions of Traveller (though I was a latecomer to T20 and GURPS was more of a born again thing having given up on GURPS around 1991).

September 1977, a friend brought this new game to our group. First Edition LBB 1-3. We all went nuts and within a week, I had my own set of books, alas now long gone.

I still play around with my ATU and have even adapted it to fit into the OTU. We played for YEARS without the OTU...

Later I joined the Navy and met another group that wanted to play Traveller, that was 1981-1983. We played in the Spinward Marches, fighting those nasty mind-freaks and trying to build a financial empire in Lunion Sub-Sector. One of my players even became the Count of Lunion (through marriage and one tiny assassination...). We played through the Fifth Frontier War, but scattered shortly after that and after that it was Mental Traveller.

HOWEVER, a couple of months ago, my two sons (21 and 17) helped me with the Mongoose Playtest and now we are starting an adventure in the Spinward Marches in 1248. We keep on Travelling.

AND, I still muck around with my ATU. I am currently redoing the UWPs into MGT format (adding Temperature for example) using the Hard Science Rules (which I pretty much used anyway). Maybe some day I will print it (probably not). The Pleiades Cluster Campaign still lives!

The little black box sometime in late 1977 when I stopped in at the local "Little Professor" bookstore.

I've played every version since. Until now, my favorite version was a copy of The Traveller Book with a copy of the DGP task system inside the front cover. MGT looks like it will finally displace it.

Very cool! I can't wait till my kids are old enough to get into gaming. My oldest son is getting close. I can't wait to have my whole gaming group under one roof!

I swore up and down I wouldn't push my my hobbies onto my son. Well, the boy is a geek... er I mean a Fan, and now wants to be a gamer... Just have to teach him how to do the grunt work of campaign management now.

The Traveller Book.

I had already dabbled in Traveller through some friends, but I loved the presentation in TTB, and bought it for myself.

BTW, the Keith art on the front cover was what initially caught my eye for the book.

Traveller in the form of the little black books was the first role playing game I ever played, back in 1983. The Kinunir and Shadows adventures will always have a place in my heart. The first rules I owned for myself was the Traveller Book, which I went out and bought myself as soon as I'd saved enough to make the purchase... ah, memories.

Now, I've got books from every incarnation of Traveller, even though I don't have the people around to play with these days, I still love the game and collect what I can. Sad, eh?

Megatraveller, 1987

Well, technically it was CT, one of my friends at school sold a bunch of LBBs to me for a pittance, then a few weeks later I found the Megatraveller box set and that was the first edition of the game I really actually liked. And then when TNE came out that was the most awesome thing ever.

I got my start with the little black books in the late 70's. Not sure of an exact month as I wasn't in high school yet and had to ride my 10-speed down to the local comic/hobby shop to get my hands on them. I never could find enough people interested in playing to get a real campiagn going though. I never played Mega/2300/GURPS/T4/TNE although I have been looking at all of them recently. I have to say that MoTrav seems the closest to the original to me. I already have a group of six players ready to play, I just need to finish up a D&D campaign so I have time for the Traveller group.

It's interesting that most people seem to have started in the late 70s/early 80s with CT - I think I'm one of only a handful who started in the late 80s, and very few here seem to have started with later editions.

Wonder why that is.

My guess is that it was due to gaming being in a BIG lull at the time....just pre MTG. Games mostly sold to previous customers, and for whatever reason, GDW did not manage (or try much) to sell it as a new game to a new audience. And, well, losing a chunk of their audience to the change didn't help either....not a jab at TNE, by the way. GDW actually lost me at MT.

Which should be a big hint as to which version I started with.

That said, my wife suggests that the main reason both gaming and traveller was in a lull then was that I was in Grad school, and not really gaming or buying games to keep the market afloat. Thanks, dear........

Started playing in the mid 80's after playing a lot of D+D before that, friend had the Traveller hard back book and a load of supplements he picked up in a second hand shop. I bought a two book CT boxed set, ran a long term MT campaign throughout the 90's. Dabbled with TNE and Imperium games stuff. Bought T20 but didn't like the whole d20 system. Currently in love with MGT, looks like its a return to the fast and furious game style that Traveller should be. Should point out that I also own hero Traveller, yeah I'm a fanboi, I know.

I drove by the store that started me down the Traveller path, it's now a discount insurance shop....

I was in that store every day after school for nearly 3 years when I was in middle school, hoping for something new in a digest sized book..... Man those where the days....
