What type of ships are GMs/PCs looking for?

Hi all,

I enjoy designing ships and making deckplans. I have created several I have posted here.

I would like to do some more, but I want to do ones that GMs might find useful for encounters, or PCs might find useful as personal ships.

What are you looking for in a ship?

- Jump range

- Manoeuvre drive

- Number of staterooms

- Amount of cargo

- Number and type of weapons

- Other special requirements

- How expense? (super-cheap, average, sky's the limit)

I am open to working on almost anything.

Give me a challenge.

Okay I have a starship in mind for you. See what you think about this.

I want to know what the build and cost would be for a VIP carrier that can outmanoeuvre in any difficult situation, to transport and protect the onboard VIP and his entourage (max 15 persons total). The client for this vessel puts forth a requirement for a high jump drive, high manoeuvre drive vessel, with sandcasters and possibly shields of some description, and zero attack weapons.

Some of the entourage may double as ship's crew. There will be a minimum of 3 emergency low berths to support life in case of illness on ship or assassination attempts. Hopefully, there will be enough cargo space to furnish a small flat and garage. However, the request for this feature may be scrapped at the last minute.

The ship's drives should be protected by armoured bulkheads, and there should also be an emergency power systems that be easily called upon from backup. Other features can be added at the Architects discretion, provided they can justify why they are adding them. The contract shall be awarded to the most robust VIP or statesman friendly design! Good luck.

I'd love to see some deck plans for the stuff I've been designing. I do adventure class ship and I'm trying to do designs for each of the races in the Aliens of Charted Space books.
If you want to try a challenge, try making a K'kree courier ship. Jump 4, maneuver 2-4, probably some K'kree automation and a crew enclosure. Lasers in the turrets. And enough cargo to move something important or a jump net to tow it at the cost of speed and jump range.

Sounds interesting. I have started the VIP Carrier requested by Limpin Legin.

I will put this on my list. K'kree ships are odd in the sense that there is not much to see inside one as the K'kree (being claustrophobic) want basically one large room.

That's understandable. I find making them usable ships kind of a challenge at least.

Civilian and military vessels of 20,000 tons and less.
Exploratory and transport ships, especially.
2000 ton or less. I've never had a character or group have a ship over 1000 tons.
There are groups that like playing Naval campaigns, so they will be in anything up to a million tons but they'll never own it and use it like most explorer or trading groups.

Don't forget lasers can act as point Defense and ships that are shooting down missiles cannot attack with those weapons. Just sayin.

They would be useful for ships that you have to sneak onto or in other ways that the Referee can use them for adventure locations.

Here's one: I want to evacuate a high pop world. Say it is one that Ye Merrie Aslan are going to genocide (as per Tryaoke or similar planets in the Trojan Reach with significant human populations and murderous Aslan conquerors) or maybe I've had a stroke and I've decided that the Empress Wave is actually a Good Idea that I'll use*.

For whatever reason, I need to move as many people as possible over the next five years over a distance of five parsecs and I have a very big budget for hiring a million tons of prime mover ship or ships and whatever tugs or modules are needed to turn it around fast at each end/in the middle/whatever.

What's the best you can come up with to save as many people as possible from the geno-cats/bored game designer responsible for impending gigadeaths?

*If you ever see me posting positively about Virus or the Empress Wave please contact UK emergency services immediately because seconds count when blood vessels fail in the brain.

What is the max jump you need?

In my signature, I have a document with my designs. If you look in it, you will find my Hercules Merchant Tender with various jump numbers. I also have the Type V 50,000-Ton pods. Look at my AutoBerth pods and calculate how many can fit. It’s big and can move a lot of people.
