i mean. the Demos is aparently the new cheesy unit in this game. the only weapons that reaches byond 18 inches is the main beam on the adira, the torpedoes on the elutarian, the battle laser on the sulust and the light torpedoes on the demos. pitch an adira against an ka`bin`tak, the adira is alomost half dead when it can start shooting himself

so anny tips

Ok lets get one thing straight; Centauti play now how they should play. They are no longer the beam team but rather the massed ion cannons and this is how they should play. The adira is not terrible the potential of that thing is nasty. I have played with one and it is very very nice. But heres the big tip dont fly into the ka bin taks front arc.

yeah.. so probably keeping it in hyperspace to give it another angle is a better choise

Terrain?

I know it´s not common to use terrain at all, or to place it anywhere it could have a real effect on the game, but a small dustcloud in the centre or the odd planet does make the game more tactical, and with the mad medium-to-short range firepower of the Centauri, my guess is that their best asset is now the maneuvrability of their small ships + trying to use cover until you´re in range.

I had a nice little game last month, introducing our local game group to the 2nd edition, pitching a Centauri player against Narn. The Centauri player started complaining as soon as he saw the new stats of both fleets - until he got into range of his Ion Cannons. You should have seen his smile after the attack phase! :) And that was pretty much flown directly towards the enemy, the things he could have done if he had only had a little terrain...

Whats not to like about the Centauri (and their ships) :)

massed Ion Cannons at 4" more range than the Narn nearly good guns - its lovely sweet spot if you find it and often you can with the supeior speed and agility of the Centauri ships.

a vast range of different ships at most levels (except war +)

The Demos is very good but so is the Maxmus, Liati, Dargan, Vorchan (not as but still great but people still prefer it), Balvarian, Sullust, Kutai, Haven etc etc

The fighters are all brilliant............the Rutarian can be especially deadily

Terrain can be extremely useful if it is there to get in rnage of your guns. Most of the Narn shiips I have fought have one or two decent ranged guns and then short (8") guns. Even the Bin Tak has nothing except its powerful front guns over 8".

not sure if any help :)

I still find some of the 'short range' discussions strange. There are a variety of ships in the Centauri fleet with good range, and those that don't tend to have good speed. Use All Power and your usually already hitting the enemy deployment zone. We started calling it 'lunge' range a while back to indicate the real effective range of most ships.

Sure there are some 45 inch weapons in the game now, but they will rarely get even one shot where you cannot lunge into range on the offending ship.

Ripple

IMO Centauri rely on their closing-in arnament, the ion array, to be their main weapon. And it's not 'short' when compare to other fleets in general. Most race close-in weapons are what you call knife ranged, being around 8".

Centauri ships tend to have execellent speed as well, which increase their threat range if used properly.

Hence you have to stack layers of weapons arc from multiple ships to establish kill zones. Their long range weaponry are ideal to deal with targets that are out of these kill zones and/or to be use as a coup de grace.

Narns for example are ideal of breaking your attempts to concentrate on establishing your kill zones by break up your fleets into piece meal so they can spread the damage intake throughout their fleet as a whole. And that plays into their strength of tanking dmg[/i]

thank you all, going to read through s&p to check out the strats they have written..

i must agree what brains says, in every game we play we allways use terrain,
it adds a much more strategic element rather than just plain attacking

But I digress:

The centauri's biggest two assets are frankly maneuverability and sheer firepower.

When talking about ranges you need to factor in the speed of the ship as well as this effectively extends the engagement range. For example, the Ion cannons on a Demos may be only 18 range but when you bear in mind that the ship itself has a 14" move (even without going all power to engines...) it has an effective STRIKE RANGE of 32". 34 with the torpedoes.

I LOVE the new Centauri list. They play like their onscreen counterparts now. The Demos I DO agree might be a little TOO much and I personally would advocate dropping its ion cannons to 8. But the extra 2 arent really THAT big a deal it just makes it a bit of a no brainer over the Vorchan in my eyes.

Well my Ion Cannons only have 12 " range but nothing to be sniffed - i would prefer your 18" Ion Cannons though  . So 26" Ion / 34 Torps:)

Agree re the Demos :)

Have to agree. When I first saw the changes to the centauri I thought "damn there goes my favourate fleet down the bog, no dd beam, short range, bye bye most intercepters" But after playing a few 2e games I think I love them more than ever. I mean, in my last two 5pt raid games against narn I've lost a total of 3 ships. The last game was against 4 var-nics and 1 dag-kar, and I lost 1 demos!!!

Before this thread got all serious again, I was going to say "cute bald chicks". But then I remembered Londo's wives. Eeek
