What is "Skelos?"

What is "Skelos?" Is it a person, place or thing?

Skelos is a blind seer who is supposed to have lived many centuries before and who is said to have possessed the greatest knowledge in mystical and magical arts that a mere mortal could possess.

I would say he is somewhat equivalent to Lovecraft's Abdul-al-Azred (who wrote the Al Azif - the Necronomicon).

Skelos is mentioned in "Queen of the Black Coast" and "Black Colossus", IIRC. It was likely some ancient sorceror.

There is also a "well of Skelos" which is said to lead to hell itself (I can't remember the title of the story, mayu be the scarlet citadel) from which a huge snake went out.
This well was located in a dongeon but I think it was so called as a reference to the seer.

Skelos was a sorceror from back around the times of Atlantis (or pre maybe, we're not sure) who was immensely powerful. He wrote a tome full of magic and what not so that was powerful and evil it makes the Necronomicon look like The Cat in the Hat.

The book was called the Book (or Scrolls) of Skelos and it pretty much THE thing that sorcerors want in the Hyborian age.

With dead hands fumbling his silken coat;
And follow the ships through the wind-blown wrack -
Follow the ships that come not back.

There also was a Sword of Skelos book written by Andrew J. Offiut (sp?). I never read the book. Apparently, this Skelos guy was an innovator of the early hyborian copyright paten. :lol:

Vathelos the Blind and his six iron bound books are also mentioned in "Pool'. He was probably Skelos' biggest competitor for most awesome magic book(s) in the Hyborian Age. Of course, the human skin bound books of Tsotha-lanti (Scarlet Citadel) were also worthy.
